700r4 what is the right Tail housing to use.

have look on threads but it got really confusing with all the lingo.. just need a straight answer if possible.. I have a two chassis one th350 and another th400 ..im wanting to replace the th400 with a 700r4. I have two 700r4 with different tail housing one I believe ins a 86 out of a pickup 2wd with mechanical speedo.its a parts only trans./ the other is completel form a 89 or 90s pickup 2wd.. what tail housing works and can I swap elec speedo for the mechanical one thanks.

another 700r4 housing Iv seen is where the trans mounts behind the speedo..

You can use the one with the speedo housing. the one with the electric speed sensor looks like out of a Camaro with the torque arm brace. Any way the housing will fit either one just make sure to use the INSIDE gear or reluctor with the right stuff. Meaning if your using the mech speedo on the one that had the Electric sensor when you take off the housing change out the metal gear for the plastic one. They will work either way.

The reluctor wheel on the electric sensor will be pressed on the output shaft.

The mechanical gear will be held snug and retained with a clip

It is true the reluctor is pressed on but not so tight that you can't get it off with hand tools. Also the shaft itself should have the hole in it to hold the clip spring needed to hold the plastic speed gear in place. Sorry I had just got up from my nap and wasn't to clear in my post. thanks you guys for the input... I was hoping to rebuild my (elec speedo) in the less costly and timely way... the one for parts (mech speedo) is a good friend of mines and it was just for mock up and not for sell../ And it was very difficult finding a 700r4 2wd out here locally..I just pick this one up... I mite have to call monster trans or bowtie transmission and c what they recommend.. most likely what was said above.

You don't need a new housing. All you need is the drive gear, driven gear, and driven gear housing. The tailhousing is the same. Bowtie can probably help or if you have a friendly parts guy at your local GM dealership. Just get parts for an '87 C10 with 700R4 and whatever reareend ratio and tires you have.
