1972 C10 Hot Rod

1972 C10 Drag truck build
I have made drawings and did alot of research and want to bring life back to this classic truck. Ive spent then saved, spent, then saved, and spent again, right back. This truck helps keep me focused in life along with my friends and family. Ive got alot of plans, this is just a steping stone in my life. Plans are: 16inch rear slicks, four link suspension and coilovers, narrowed Ford 9inch with 4:11 ratio, Gearvendors overdrive, and rollcage.
Motor is coming from the Blazer a 468BBC. 468 has roller rockers, cam, stock oval ports, Sanderson BB8 stainless headers, Edlebrock Air gap RPM intake, 750cfm carb, HEI distributor with TH400 transmission. Plans are:MSD Probillet dist., 6AL2, 345cc assault heads with Twin 88mm turbos. Plans may change. Im saving enough money to buy High Performance and build it.
I pulled 350 out already for swap. But it also has blow by. Previous owner said engine problems started after to out ran a 55 Chevy.

I want to run in Drag Week, looks like something I would love to participate in.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

If going a gear vendors and a I assume 16 wide?? Slick so will be in the 32-33 tall range I'd suggest 4:30 gears, that would work for 3 speed final 1to1 ratio for racing with a full roller BBC. Then use the vendors on the highway should still be fairly decent manners.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

Yea from readING on the Biggest rear tire tread, I can only go as big 14 inch wide with stock frame rails. 4:30 gears sounds nice I just needed more reassurance before I build a new one. The truck was originally blue should I leave it black. Tell me your thoughts.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

I run a true 14 wide 32.5 tall Hoosier slick with a 4:30 gear trap out about 130mph at around 7000rpm. That's also the biggest slick I found for a 12" wide rim and they are a but too wide and I have to run the back a bit higher than I like, next time I'll be going with a true 12 wide tread to bring the section width down. I run a narrowed 9" with a 4 link and stock frame rails.

Color choice all owner preference but a a nice medium blue would look good.

Here is a pic showing that the rear tires are a bit too wide, watch the actual specs of the tire vs the numbers on the side, I've ran a 31x16 ET Street and they only measured 12" on the tread width.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

Those are big plans, and if your serious about running something like Drag Week, you'll need to know every inch of the car. What your describing doing will take a fairly significant budget if you plan on doing it fully, tho I imagine you know that.

Do you have a class or et target in mind? If your looking at Heavy Iron, then its a different ballpark over something like the street car classes.

Oh, and if your gonna but twins on it, please consider running fuel injection. Boost carbs are a pain IMO, and there's huge driveability improvements if your looking at trying the longer/endurance events like drag week, drag weekend, or the others.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

Right now a full roller 489 BBC, it's 10.89 to 1 and dyno'd at 640 on motor with a too small carb, I'd say it's closer to 650 and I use a 180 jet shot of nitrous, I tech for 10.00 so have it tuned to run in the 10.1's, right now I'm running a built turbo 350 with about a 5000 stall off the foot brake it pulls 1.39 60 foots.

Some day I'll finish off the cage and tech it for 8.50, next motor will be race gas only as that's all I run now and will be a 582 or bigger, shooting for 1200 on motor and running 8's, just not sure when it will happen.

Here's my current setup

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

I want to shoot for 1400hp. Ok yea ive been thinkin a 5000 stall with trans brake. How does a built th350 compare to a th400? And what's the width on your rear axle housing?

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

Here is the present state of my truck. I ran 9.16 at 142 with a 468 and a 250 shot. I still have trailing arms and planning to run 7's with the new motor and nitrous combo.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

The 350 won't take 1400hp, when I go to a bigger motor I'll be swapping to either a 400 or a glide in a SFI case. To make 1400 I assume you will either be spraying, boosting it or using a non conventional head of some sort and 2 x dominators or a serious EFI, the 1200 I'm planning was corrected with a 20* head and likely in the 14:1 range with C16. I'll be ringing it to run motor so even though my nitrous system will still be there max will be 100 jets for me just to play now and then.

Take dyno numbers with a grain of salt, my 640hp runs faster than lots of "750hp" setups, I just talk it as to give an idea of the combo.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

I fit 32x14.5 under my truck with stock frame rails I took a steel rim cut the welds off and offset it the distance needed. I worked at a heavy fabrication shop but I'm sure it is doable at home. Had them balanced with the slick and tube was only one ounce on each tire guy said it was probably the slicks

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

My rearend is pretty narrow. I can measure it for you as soon as my side work slows down. I do car stereo and I am slammed right now with Christmas. I have 14 inch wheels and I want to get a set of twelves with a 315/60/15 drag radial. I am not sure who makes a wheel that will work or if that is even possible.

Re: 1972 C10 Hot Rod

The correct way to go about it is to buy the tires and wheels you want to run. Set them in place to fit inside your bedsides and then measure wheel center to wheel center. This is your WMS to WMS of your differential. To determine your housing width, you will need to decide on what brake offset (GM or Ford) you want and which housing ends (GM or Ford). And also whether you will be running drum brakes or discs.
