l83 gen v in a 68 c10
hey all, I've installed a 2014 l83 from a silverado in my 68 c10. Were at the point of start up yet are having fuel pump issues. Im using the factory pump, module and pressure sensor. all wires have been verified, checked and reverified, the module was installed on another truck and is working fine, the pump was powered directly and is good. The vats2 have been disabled as well, we've got keyed power to the correct pins as well as constant, good grounds etc. Im stumped and am hoping somebody can help...

Looks good! What is your fuel pump problem? Is it not coming on at all, or is the truck just not starting?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
the pump isn't coming on at all, when key is cycled its not priming or running. Im assuming its a bus signal issue, but not sure how to check that.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I just saw your more descriptive post on LS1Tech. Like you said, doesn't seem to be the pump. On your HPTuners, are you getting any codes? Might just have to go outside the ecm controls like the other guy did if it does turn out to be a CAN issue. When you did the re-write, are you sure you didn't forget something? I'm not a tuner, but know things can get messed up that way. Just a thought.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
hp tuners wasn't showing any codes but we are having a few issues with emailing the files etc. Gonna talk to my guy tomorrow, he's thinking its possibly an ecu issue now

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I'd think if it was a communication issue with the bus system, you'd be seeing a code straight away. These things tend to error on the side of "throw the code".
I assume the other truck it was installed in, was running a different ECU?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
correct. we've considered swapping out ecu's but i understand thats problematic as well as you have to rewrite the vin in order for it to work

Good luck, don't know that I'd seen the GenV swapped before.
Where is the VIN stored?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Gen V's have been posing some interesting problems. HPT JUST literally on the 26th, updated the software to be able to read the 2016 Escalade, which is a PITA. From a performance standpoint, tuning DI motors is its own set of challenges.
Just so we're clear, there are two fuel pumps on these DI motors. A block mounted HP pump, and the tank mounted pusher/lift pump. Also, the 2014/15 could have one of 2 different ECM's depending if its early or late release.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Also doing an electric power steering pump as the new engines don't have provisions for a pump. The silverados use electric rack and pinion. Did a little research and found this kit from Canev. Super simple install. should be clean once all tucked in. Should only see the reservoir

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
ok, so the ecm is on its way back from the tuners. Found out the engine is actually a 2015 so we had to wipe it and flash it as a 2014. Apparently hp tuners software won't turn the vats off on a 2015 yet. Im using Nelson Performance in san antonio and he has been diligent in digging for answers. Now its flashed as a 2014 with both sets of vats shut off..... Hopefully here by friday and I can plug it in and see what happens.

I'll give you the heads up that the 2016 Escalade didn't want to take the tune from a 2015 when my guy tried it*. Hopefully the 14-15's your interchanging shared the same ECM style and will let it slide lol. *The 2016 did finally get a tune put in it for the procharger, but there was a bit of a learning curve getting the DI to do what was desired. PC themselves don't even offer a file yet as technically they don't sell a kit.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
It will show vats 2 disabled yet is not actually shutting it off. It also doesn't show vats 1 on the 15's like it does on the 14's

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
It did, the ecm was a '15. so they flashed it as a '14 and disabled both sets of vats.
It was a happy feeling when i turned the key on and heard the fuel pump cycle! |

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
do have an interesting noise though. at 1800 and up rpm on de-celeration only it makes a funky "flutter" noise. seems to be coming from the drivers side front area of the engine but can't seem to pinpoint what it is.At idle and throttle up its not there and sounds great.....

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I'd take a look at the tensioner, if the sound is mechanical at all.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
hmm, its still there and with an oscilloscope we can't pin point it. Im wondering if its the sound of the dod cylinder shutdown through the loud ass headers?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Its actually possible that what your hearing is cavitation in the HP pump. When the Escalade was getting done, overdriving the pump on the stock injection window would actually cause it to cavitate on decel. It had to be backed down and run a bit leaner (still very happy).
Cavitation in the HP pump can kill the pump.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
cool, now how would i go about correcting this? Is it a tune thing or something i need to change? We've not had a chance to hook up with hp tuners yet since its been running. Gonna do a "house" tune on it to get it to the show at the end of february, then do the cam and gear swap, At that point its going to the professionals for a dyno and street tune.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Its in the tune for the mostpart. It happens when the pump is working overtime to supply the commanded fuel. If your working with an above average tuner who's got genV experience, they should be able to sort it out.
