Flowmaster 40s vs glass packs/cherry bomb
My engine is a 350 SBC with thumpr cam, right now I'm running flowmaster 40s true dual no X pipe off stock 1985 manifolds. Don't get me wrong I love the sound the 40 series makes I just want more a throaty pop pop sound that muscle cars used to sound like.
Can you all shed some light on info on glass packs/cherry bombs?! Maybe some pros and cons and some brands to choose from. Not 100% on switching out, but I might get convinced! Cheers Edit : I DO have serious drone right now with my setup, looking to clear that up as well possibly. Maybe not, I have pipes 90' in front of both rear wheels :O

Might want to check out Porter mufflers. They're steel packs. I have two of their shorty mufflers on my 71' and the sounds killer. Has what I guess you would call that "Old School" muscle car sound with almost no drone. I was super impressed, plenty loud when you step on it but quiets down when you let off of it. I'd imagine their full size mufflers would be a bit more mellow than mine.

Are you running a X- pipe or a H-pipe ? I went with 40's on my truck with a cross over and I'm very pleased with the exhaust sound. I dumped mine right before the rear axle.
I think what ever you choose will sound good, but you will need to learn how to keep it to a dull roar most of the time. You don't want all the attention on you every time you drive your truck. Save the getting on it for the highway and back roads. After a while the drone will tone down a little bit, and you may be able to adjust the engine around the drone also. Ken

I took the tailpipes off my truck recently and the drone in the cab almost drove me crazy. I had to put some tailpipes back on it. I didn't realize how much difference it makes from just having the mufflers stop at the rear axle.
Oh yeah, for mufflers I like straight through rather than echo chambers. If you get glasspacks, get Thrush. I think the Cherrybombs are louvred inside.

I'll check out porter mufflers. What's the benefits of steel packs, just a different sound?
Ken, I have no X or H pipe. I love the sound, I bought knockoff 40 series and just looking to change it up. I'll take my truck to shows, to cruise around one or twice a week, and to take plastics and cardboard to the recycle center. My setup was installed about a year and a half ago by a local shop.

The main benefit is the steel won't blow out like a lot of glass packs will over time. My C20 had new glass packs on it when I bought it and by the time I sold it about a year later it might as well have been straight piped.

That pop pop sound always sounded like way undersized pipes to me, I always hear it on cholo impala's with dual 1" pipes.

Hahahaha makes sense.. I have 2.5 inch pipes. I don't want an over kill pop pop sound, I want to be able to drive it still without going crazy while doing so.

Straight pipes for life lol jk. I have a single in to dual out straights on my 79. People are surprised when I tell them it's straight piped. Not poppy and with the windows up not to loud and no drone.

Honestly I believe the drone is from where my pipes are positioned, behind the cab. I have cats as well but I'm putting my money on its just where my pipes exit and the setup I'm running. It's hard to have a convo in the cab without speaking loudly, I keep my music on about 15 or 20, 30 will make you deaf. Oh and forget talking with the windows down while going 55 MPH lol you're yelling and going "what?!" "Huuuh?!" "I can't hear ya jim!"

i have dual 2 1/2" pipes that 90 out in front of the rear tires, long tube headers, and 8" Cherry Bomb glasspacks. for me its just about the perfect sound. its got the poppy/crackly/rumbly sound that i think you are looking for without the popping when u let off the gas and are slowing down. no drone whatoever and if u back off the gas they can be somewhat quiet.
they arent generic glasspacks they are actual Cherry Bomb brand. you can get them in 3 or 4 different lengths i got the 12" ones so the body is actually 8" which id imagine are the loudest. no baffles and they are reversible. i mean they arent super loud but sound very good i tried to get some sound clips but they dont come out good with my camera almost like this only a bit deeper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft36DA9zSMs |

Well that is surely good news! So glad someone is running a similar setup. I'd like to run headers but that's not happening now. I'm wanting to run glass packs but I'm fearing I won't like them! I'm also running a thumpr cam with long tube headers, 2.5" pipe, x-pipe, 40 series Flows dumped before the axle.
Has a nice deep choppy rumble at idle. Before I added the x-pipe the exhaust would become unbearable after about 30 minutes of driving (maybe I'm just getting old)... At high rpm the exhaust note is definitely a lot smoother compared to true duals, sounds very similar like your newer V8 sport cars.

My 20 year old Thrush glasspacks are still quieter than my Thrush welded muffs. The Thrush welded muffs are the 3rd set of mufflers I have put on this truck in 5 years. The first 2 sets rusted through in 2 years each. If the Thrush welded muffs rust out I will go glasspack next because they last forever. The Thrush welded are just as loud as straight pipes imo. If I get tired of the noise they may go before they rust out.

I've got 305 to H to flowmaster 40s,great sound better response then the open/ broken muffler I got it with.
350 to cherry bombs no H. Both trucks are manifolds to 2.25 pipe, out before the axle. Love em loud

One of the tricks we use on our old Harley's that run drag pipes or old worn out mufflers. By worn out mufflers, I mean the insides have long ago rusted and crumbled away. Leaving a nice chrome exterior shell.
Lollipops. I make my own out of large washer that fit the inside diameter of the pipe. Weld a bolt or stud on the end and drill a hole in the pipe. Letting the washer block the flow of the muffler or exhaust pipe. The treads drop out the drilled hole. And then double nut them so you don't loose them later on. Turn the washer in the exhaust flow to adjust for sound or tune. I did a exhaust not long ago where I was really disappointed with the sound of the muffler. During all driving modes, So I lollipoped it as far up the tailpipe as possible, adjusted to a better sound. It took away the pop on decel. Something to think about. Ken

My flowmaster 40's on my 78 exit behind the bed, are 2.5" with H-pipe and headers, and drone like crazy. My old 79 had ramhorn manifolds, dual 2.5", dual catco convertors, H-pipe, and 40 series and exited in front of each rear wheel. They also droned like crazy. Its a flowmaster 40 series thing. The 50 series in my current 98 just dumps after the muffler, somewhere right around the back of the cab/front of bed area and is a million times quieter, still sounds great outside the truck though.

So basically you have glass packs in place of cats! Lol nice! I only have cats because I didn't wanna mess around and fail inspections because of them. I could've knocked out the guts though.. I feel like my knockoff 40s sound great but I cheaped out and I'm paying for it ect drone. I'm hoping if I switch to glass packs it'll go away..?

dont knock the cats out and put them back on. knock them out then put them overtop a section of pipe so they look like cats but arent cats. hallowed out cats have a terrible "hallowed out cat sound" lol
my truck is so far from having drone its the opposite. there is actually a quiet spot crusing around 2,00rpms. get on it and it really rumbles. i have a Comp HE260 cam and it has a slight lope at idle which sounds good but id love to hear it with a Thumper cam i say GO FOR GLASS |

Yes I had duals before I went with an x-pipe. I built my own exhaust using an x-pipe kit I bought from summit.

A few years ago my Son and I picked up a 79 Custom Deluxe from an old farmer in our area.I happened to be going through a rough divorce at the time, and needless to say we were on a tight budget. Cam had two flat lobes, and was popping through the carb. I had a good used cam from a 283, and man did that ever "wake up" that old 350. We "custom" built an exhaust system (I have a Miller Mig). Picked up factory tail pipes from Walker for a 6.2 diesel square body. They had the true dual exhaust right from factory. Welded on a set of Cherry Bomb bottles. That truck sounded good. Real nice "Brrapp" when you revved it up, but not bad cruising on the highway.
