How does one tell if its from a truck or car? Pinion shaft dia. needed.

That IMO is definitely a '63-'64 truck 12 bolt posi unit. That has the very heavy springs with the aluminum plates. Some refer to it as a Dana posi unit. That would be a decent deal for someone with a '63 or '64 that still has the 17 spline axles.

Is there a way to tell if its 17 spline by just pulling the cover off or do you have to pull the axle. I know mine came back as 63,64, but I know they changed axles in mid to late 64.

You had better pull an axle my truck is a 65 and has the 17sp axles as well as the longer track bar with the large bracket welded to housing tube
