Saw this on youtube. While the parts book lists the inner dimension for the clip wheels it doesn't list the diameter for the axle tube hole.

I measured my original 1960 3/4 ton 4x4 caps and come up with 4.970 . The one on the right I showed you before is .025 larger or 4.995 . Not sure if it "was" a Chevy or GMC cap originally but it has no signs of the Bowtie or GMC stamping. The factory edges just seem to be smoothed out.

Thanks Jon, I was going back through your messages yesterday trying to find that spec...

Do the edges of the hole look like they were cut and rolled, or just cut?

Are there any tool marks or other signs that the 61-63 cap is homemade?

They look just cut , like the NOS 1/2 ton you sent me. Once the hole was cut just smoothed out.

The 61-63 was cut after it looks like. Its an NOS cap but theres no paint on these edges and a scratch on the surface.

Is the 61-63 1/2 ton cap opening about 3.675? That's what I got on my 57-60 1/2 ton caps.

So it stands to reason that the hole size stayed the same over the years. Which is what I would have guessed since the hubs were the same.

That 4.970 measurement works out to 4 and 31/32". Or basically a fingernail's difference on each side of the hub. So instead of tying myself in knots with that I'll just go with a 5" punch. The hub is exactly 4.5", so that will leave a neat quarter inch on each side of the cap opening. Which is the same gap the half tons have. Problem solved, although I'll still keep hunting for originals.
