'64 C10 steering help needed
Posting in the original thread didn't bring it up from the grave so new thread!
Heres the original thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=643466 Hello again Guys, haven't posted in a while but kept hovering around. I have a few new problems to deal with and need some help. I broke my manual steering box while hunting and I can't find everything I need anywhere. I'm trying to do it on the frugal side ( work is slow right now ) So unless you guys know of a better way of doing things I'm looking at #1 Finding a rebuild kit The ball bearings/ U channel and the steering shaft work fine so all I would NEED is the bearings, 2 seals and the bushings. I took what was left of one of the bearings to a bearing shop and they had nothing to match. I found the seals on rock auto I checked NAPA and classic industries with no luck I found these look right but not sure if they would fit and no way to check http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-1982-Co...-/321966083651 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-Size-Ch...-/181995907921 2nd option is finding a rebuilt box but what's the fun in that? Its expensive with the Canadian dollar and the core charge. 3rd option is mounting power steering I have access to a working power steering box, all I'd need is the pump/reservoir and possibly a mounting bracket. Captainfab seems to be the man to talk to here are a few pics |

I think if you spent the few bucks for the supporting membership posting in the parts section would have got you what you needed. I am 100% sure a good box is out there in your budget.

Re: '64 C10 steering help needed
Hopefully some one can help you. I have always just gotten a new/rebuilt one from the autoparts. I have not tried to rebuild one in a whole lot of years.

They are easy to rebuild. The small parts like that are available at some of the specialty parts shops like LMC. If the brg. surface on the worm shaft are rough, you will need to find another gear box. It is pretty expensive. I can't tell from the photos. The ball brgs. for the worm & the bushing for the sector are reasonable.

Re: '64 C10 steering help needed
So little update,
I'm really hurting for money so unfortunately I have to do this as frugally as possible. I'm going to to replace the bearing that self destructed and use the original seals. One of the bearings is still good and from a bit a research I found out that you can use grease mixed with gear oil so the seals aren't as important. I have to call tomorrow to order the bearing. |

This might sound a little stupid but it is worth a shot. Do you have any industrial valve shops around Grand Prairie? The first place I worked had 6 inch plug valves that had Saginaw gear boxes on them to manipulate the valves. I thought about my old truck every time I swung them. They were pretty old at that time so it would be a long shot for sure. They might have something in the boneyard you never know.

Re: '64 C10 steering help needed
Thanks for all the offers guys, I like this forum more every time I come back.
so another little update the bearing is on order, and I found a supplier with ball-bearings to rebuild the one bearing that's still good and all the seals for a whole lot less that what I would of paid. hopefully she goes back together well and I'll be able to drive her once again |
