Hinge rebuild kit options
Hey everyone, I need to rebuild my hinges. I saw a kit at advanced auto by help. I think it was the dorman or something like that. Is this a good option or should I look some where else? What does everyone like?

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
If you are referring to hinge pins and bushings, don't get the Dorman kit. Get the OEM GM pins and bushings from a GM dealer or buy online from an OEM vendor. The Dorman pins are too big for the bushings. Search for hinge pins in this forum and you will find the OEM part numbers in a posting I did on this subject.

Huh, I have Dorman pins and they fit ok? I mean, I tapped them in with a hammer, but nothing major. My OEM bushing's were plastic and busted.

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
If you look at the links I listed, you will see that the Dorman pins (with Dorman bushings) did not seat all the way down, regardless of how much I hammered them. The splined top of the shaft would not seat. I tried all of the bushings furnished with the Dorman package. I only saw one Dorman kit at the parts store - maybe you got a different kit. For about the same price you can get OEM GM pins and bushings, so that's what I used. My 83 had brass bushings which were worn out, not plastic.

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
How many puns and bushings do indeed? 2 pins and 4 bushings per door?

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
Well I still have two packs, because I wasn't sure if I was getting a pair or one in a box, so I'll see if I can dig them out and get the part number off them, because you're not the first person I've seen say the Dormans didn't fit correctly, but by then I already had installed them lol.
So now I'm curious what's different, about my truck, or my new pins, because with him as my only help, I still had it done in an hour, easy peasy.

That's true Michigan kids are tough as nails or in this case pins.

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
Most likely the previous owner of your truck drilled out the hinge holes.
GM part numbers are in the link I posted above. My local dealers were to lazy to look up the part numbers so I bought them online. Some OEM vendors online: www.oewarehouse.com www.oehq.com www.gmpartsdirect.com www.rockauto.com www.davesauto.com Also, once you have the part numbers, always check Amazon and Ebay for OEM parts. |

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
I found the pins and bushings at a local gm dealer. Total cost was $31 for everything. I would much rather had real gm parts on my truck.

Re: Hinge rebuild kit options
Dorman has supplied GM with OEM fasteners for years and years, I would not hesitate to use a Dorman product, the alternative is usually Chinese!!
