square 4x4 bellhousing location 250 vs SBC
I have long wanted a 4x4 square body. i want a long bed 3/4 ton (I use my trucks as, well, trucks) (plus I likethe look of tall tires on steelies with hubcaps). Prefer automatics but not desperately (grew up on 3 on the column). I prefer GMC's (always have!) and have lots of parts including a couple driving 2wd trucks plus a nice cab and clip.
I really like my straight six's, have 5 of them including a driver and a fresh lower rebuild with a compression bump and cam. So here's my dilema. There is a decent 86? 3/4 4x4 chassis with a rusty body on it for sale locally. I'd like to swap in a 250. I'm pretty sure that the truck is 350 / TH400. My big issue is whether or not the bell housing face is in the same location. Anyone out there done the reverse swap and can tell me?

And yes, I promised SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) that significant numbers of parts and trucks would disappear if more arrived. Probably would sell the diesel including all its spares, just to make room in the barn.
posted in case my wife vistis and reads.

I'm not positive, but pretty sure you should be okay. I have swapped a 6 for an 8 a few years ago, and don't recall having to adjust the cross member. You will have to round up some 6 cyl engine mounts.

Re: square 4x4 bellhousing location 250 vs SBC
Thanks Barry. I have both 3/4 and 1/2 ton L6 chassis available to pilfer mounts from so that shouldn't be an issue. Big question was if the bell face was in a different spot; I know the 67-72 can have issues depending on which trans / tcase set up is there. Would not be fun to discover oil pan interference.

Re: square 4x4 bellhousing location 250 vs SBC
I've done the (common) reverse swap a couple of times over the years (6 for a sbc), and the only thing I recall was a bit of a concern was distance of fan to the radiator. When installing the V8, the fan sat further back, so I would locate a deeper fan shroud, or put a spacer (sometimes both), to get enough air flow across the radiator.

I recently swapped 6 for a 350 in an 83 c10 only thing had to do was move the brackets for motor mounts on truck cross over frame. Cant remember out or in holes are there. bell housing doesn't move. went back looked the mounts go out v8 in for 6.
