Replacing Only #1 cylinder.. Tilt engine?
Going to replace #1 cylinder
I believe I should be able to unbolt some stuff and tilt the engine enough to get pan off and access to the #1 connecting rod Anyone done it? What do I have to unbolt? Yes I thought about just taking engine out but tilt requires less time and less space Any info will be helpful |

I assume you're talking about replacing the piston and rod for cylinder #1? What engine are we working with? Are you not intending to hone the cylinder?

Re: Replacing Only #1 cylinder.. Tilt engine?
I bought a '78 Chevy once with a broken #7 rod. Upon inspection I discovered that the engine had chunked the center section of the rod out the side of the pan knocking the starter off! The crank, head & cyl was fine so I punched the piston out, run a flex hone in there as best I could & stuffed an old piston / rod assy down in the cyl & off I went! Didn't even remove the intake! Drove that truck for several years before it got into the habit of sucking deer outta the woods & stuffing them through the radiator

Still don't know what engine you are talking about. I did rings bearings and a valve job years ago on a 60 Biscayne 6 without pulling the engine. I used a ridge reamer to cut the top and honed the cylinders before assembly. It was 1972 and I think I spent $250.00 including the machine shop work on the head.

Chevy 250 L6
Bad #1 piston.. Wanting to tilt the engine, remove the pan, swap out piston head, rings, rod bearing..possibly hone slightly.. Hopefully have slightly oversized rings in hand as well just in case |

Same idea I just did all six. I should have checked the wrist pins as I had a little rattle when you backed of the throttle afterwords. I drove it a couple years before selling it. I did get rid of the smoke and oil consumption.

You could loosen the trans mount. I had an automatic and don't remember loosening it. I just unbolted the motor mounts and jacked till the bell housing hit the cowl. I think I blocked the mounts to get the jack clear.

Re: Replacing Only #1 cylinder.. Tilt engine?
No need to tilt the engine. Just raise the engine enough to get the pan off. Set it back down on the mounts. Roll the crank till the piston is down and pull the rod bolts. Drive the piston out the top. If it had a bunch of ridge in the top you will need to run a ridge reamer to get the piston out. Also looks like it had pushed the head gasket out the front. Clean the top of one of the other pistons and make sure they don't have any over bore numbers stamped in them. You going to need to run a hone in it to get the rings to seat. A ball hone works the best in a worn cylinder.

Not to hijack but what if he or someone else also wanted to change the rear seal? How does one get the top piece out and the new piece in? In my case I am debating whether to try it from underneath or pull the engine.
