Help, What is this?
So what exactly is this underneath my 53? It is connected to the transmission and looks to drive another small drive line. It is activated by a metal cable that runs to the dash attached to the large knob in between the choke and throttle cable. I'm thinking a farm accessory but not sure.

Power take off contraption... does the output shaft connect to a winch or some sort of adapter like for a 3 point hitch ?

From the last picture, there are two cables that exit out the right and left that have been cut off. Its not attached to anything.

As Donaldo said that is a PTO aka power take off. The shaft running back went back to something that was used on the truck in a past life. It could have been a pump for a hydraulic lift for the bed, it could have been a gear box for a belt drive or some other equipment.
One of the 1-1/2 tons that I bought a few years ago had one that original powered a pump to pump fuel out of the tank on the back to farm equipment in the field on a wheat farm. When I worked on a dairy the one on it drove the chain setup that pushed the manure towards the beaters that spread it that were also driven by the pto.

Interesting, never saw one like that before. I do know one thing, the truck looks damn nice inside! Man that looks like a treasure!

I've seen the PTO knob on the floor of many a grain truck...open the door, there, my the seat. You could stand outside the truck and watch the grain box while lifting it.
If you wanted to remove the knob and related stuff, you might be able to put a cigarette lighter or other knob to clean up the dash. What is the toggle switch for that sits on top the dash?

I did remove that knob along with a couple of toggle switches and indication lights. Now I'm left with holes in the dash. Definitely would like to plug them up before painting it. Any ideas? Found some metal plugs from grainger online that may disappear. Not sure yet.

if you wanted to get rid of all the stuff underneath it is usually just a matter of draining the trans, unbolting the pto gearbox, and then installing a cover over the hole. probably get one from a trans shop because those pto's were pretty much the same for years. don't forget to fill the trans after, haha. all the cables and stuff just get taken off as well. if you don't want to tackle the gearbox, but wanna clean it up under there, then you could take the driveshaft etc off and just leave the pto gearbox bolted up
