6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

Need some help gear heads... Trying to decide if I should buy this and put into 72 c10.. Is it an engine that can easily tune for more hp and what transmission should I find.. It's priced nice for an engine with 30k

4l80 for the transmission.
As far as tuning yes they have been around a long time and lots of tuning is available. A cam and the tune will get you a long ways on these.

Thank you for the response next question... Will any model year on a 4l80e work on this engine? Thanks for dealing with my dumb questions I'm learning as I go

For ease I would do a 4l60e, there cheaper and easier to work with.

It's not that easy if your not mechanically inclined. You need motor mounts, trans crosse member, computer, wiring harness, find a easy to run your fuel, regulater, lines, ext. radiator mods, driveshaft gauges ext. trust me, I know. Everything I own is lsx based or swapped. Well worth it if you have the knowledge

I guess I'm a gear head when it comes to 67-72 GM Trucks. I answer a lot of questions for members here. But I don't know a thing about 2013s. Maybe ask in a forum for that year or the LSX swap forum

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

go with your instinct and use the 4L80e, cause you're gonna eventually need it if you install the 4L60e behind the 6.0 and put any sort of tune other than stock (ie: torque management) on it.

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

Im going to move this to the LS forum for you..

DO NOT USE a 4l60e behind that 6.0 unless you like replacing your transmission. The 6.0 would have had a 4l80e behind it from the factory. I don't know the year splits off the top of my head for which year transmission you will need but there are compatibility issues with different year units. Can you get the transmission from the van? It will make life much easier because it will be a 2wd unit. Most of the trucks with a 6 liter were 4wd making 2wd transmissions harder to come by.

4L80Es pretty well interchange between about 94' and up. They didn't get all the weird changes 4L60Es did, like TCC lockup clutch material changes and apply strategies (PWM, EC3, etc). I've got a 99' 4L80E from a 5.7L Express van behind my 05' 6.0L LQ9 w/ a torque converter for a 91-97' 4L80E, no problems. It works great.

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

Here's a decent link for info:

https://sites.google.com/site/sloppy...-ls/4l80e-info

The one thing that caught my eye is the first bullet point. I haven't seen the "bad" connector on any 4L80E past about 1994, even though the link says '91-'96. So I agree with "foamypirate" that you want 1994+. I think there is a subtle solenoid different in '93 back, but I can't recall. Perhaps Cline can clear some of this up if needed.

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

Aside from the obvious strength issues, I like the 4L80E's gear ratios MUCH better than the deep 1st gear of the 4L60E.

'91-'93 had a Bosch Harness & Bosch EPC Solenoid, The Harnesses & Connectors have all sorts of issues, The EPC Solenoid was not known for it reliability either, For '94 A Delphi Harness & a Holley EPC Solenoid was introduced....Far better designs.

In 2004, GM started using a Borg Warner EPC Solenoid with a different connector, The Borg Warner solenoid suffers from performance degradation after about 50,000 miles unlike the Holley design.

Leaky Harness Pass Through are common on all high mileage 4L80E's.

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

Willie, I really think a heatshield or airbox would be a benefit to you from a performance IAT/standpoint. Have you logged your IATs during a drive at all and seen what they average?

With your smoothed engine bay, the typical airflow characteristics of these trucks, and the amount of underhood heat that blower generates; I'd be inclined to think that filter is chooching decently warm air. At least in traffic/carshows/staging scenarios.

You could put together a pretty straightforward shield (and possibly a creative inlet, if you don't already have one I can't see) and you could knock a few points off your IAT's and really combat heatsoak if you live in a warm area.

Are you sure it has a 4L80E?, A 2012 should have a 6L90E.

Re: 6.0 from 2013 Chevy express

From what I'm learning if your doing dbw watch what throttle body and all your using if going with a 4l80e. I've run into wanting to add a 80e now that my old 70e give up. And it would cause a lot of work now that it's all tuned and everything for the 70e. Your gonna love the LS engine though. Mine has a stock ls2 and it's a blast to drive..

The TB doesn't care what trans is in the truck. Your tuner makes the changes to the trans and VSS/ISS settings, and thats the majority of it. Yes, if you had a lot of road tuning done the different final ratio on the trans will affect your shift points, but its not difficult to do. You'll have to add the secondary speed sensor to the harness.

L96 - 6.0L with L92 heads. I'd get it and slap an LSA supercharger on top.
