Ford 9" axle
I decided it was time to fit the pinion seal that I ordered about a month ago. After reading & watching videos on how it's done I bit the bullet & removed the seal only to discover the new one is too big, my supplier said it's the seal that they always use. It's 1/4" too big on the o\d. Any idea what's going on, why is mine not the normal size? Thanks

Re: Ford 9" axle
What they probably gave you was a 7044NA seal which fits most 9" rears. The one you need fits "small" 9" rears made in the late 80's. The part number is 3604, I think. You should be able to get the specs on both from the net and see which matches your old one.

That's very helpful many thanks, any idea which vehicles these were typically fitted to?

Re: Ford 9" axle
I think they were in the last mid 80's pick ups before Ford converted to the 8.8 rears on all their full size stuff, but that's just a guess.

Re: Ford 9" axle
If you didn't damage you old seal too bad you might be able to get the number off it or a bearing house or parts house can measure and match it.
If you can get the number off the old seal post it and I or someone else will interchange it and see if we can give you some seal numbers to hunt with
