Remote start

OK guy's,
I'm ready to tackle another add on. Has anybody done a remote start on their LS swap?
Can a factory unit be used if I get all the right parts?
Are would a aftermarket be better?
The remotes I would think would be hard to come by for this out of a yard and the aftermarket would have everything needed.

I have a remote start on 3 of my swaps. I would just go aftermarket, it will save a lot of headaches. I use DEI (Viper, Python ect) and they work great with good range.

I've been looking at the viper one myself!
Later on I will add the door locks.

I called crutchfield and talked to them about this kit and the guy said half the wiring I wouldn't need for my truck.

Did you go by the instructions for the late model wiring with the LS harness stuff are did you just use the 71 wiring diagram?
I'm just trying to figure out if I need all the wires are not.

This is where you're going to run into problems. They used to come with instructions, but now days they do not. They are made to be professionally installed, and the installers have access to the wiring diagrams. They do come with a book that says what every wire is supposed to do, but it's kind of tough to figure out how to hook some of them up. My first one took me 3 days to put on.... That being said, the actual hooking up to the truck is mostly at the large wires on the back of the ignition switch, and are just tied into them, you don't actually have to cut the wires (with the exception of the starter wire if you install the optional starter kill relay, which you should because it will keep you from trying to start it with it already running (I know you're thinking "I'll never do that" but inevitably you will, I know I have...), but I would highly recommend that they are soldered. The LS swap part wont even come into play, although the remote starts are designed for EFI, you won't be hooking anything to the computer except for maybe a tach signal, but then most of them now days have a "virtual tach" so you don't even need to do that. Another good thing about DEI is those wires on the ignition switch are color coded to GM specs, so they match up with what you have. There will be a few other wires that need to be hooked up to things like the brake light switch to shut it off when the brake is pressed, and there is also wires for an override switch, a valet take over switch and the switch used for programming different functions.

But personally, I would just recommend getting it installed professionally. That is the only way you will get the lifetime warranty that DEI offers, if you install it your self, and you accidentally hook something up backwards or otherwise wrong and smoke the control module, you're just out your money. I'm not saying you wont be able to do it, but just letting you know that it is an involved job, and sometimes it's better to leave those to the people who do them on a daily basis and know exactly what needs to be done.

I understand that about letting a professional doing it. That was my plan. I was just looking at the kit to see what features I wanted.
I'm not sure if I want the 2 way are just the single remotes yet. The local shop wants $475.00 to install it. That's the Python system though but has the same features as the viper. They can get the viper kit but they aren't a qualified dealer for them.
Thanks I guess I need to figure out is it worth the $475.00 to have it.

Python and Viper are made by the same company, DEI and are for the most part identical, so if Python is what they have, it will be just as good as the Viper. The two way remote system is nice if you're far enough away from the truck that you cant hear the siren, the remote will make a sound. It is supposed to have a mile range, but that's with no interference on flat ground, so realistically I would say half a mile. I have remote started my car from that distance before and the remote shows it is running, so that's kind of cool. But yeah, almost $500 is a lot of coin to shell out, so only you can decide if it is worth it to you.

Did you look at http://www.autoloc.com/ Andy......the have all types of systems for vehicles for the do it yourselfer.....I know mine isnt an LS vehicle but I do have a Viper alarm with remote start installed by Best Buy....the systems now are almost plug in play for the installer and you a programmable handheld interface that like becuase it is less work and install time.....in my last GMC pickup they tried to steer from the closeout Audiovox alarm because it took hours to wire in to the truck and harder to trouble shoot for them......Andy I have no preference on this Im just giving you a little more info and something else to look at.......good luck......

A week from Monday I take the truck to have the remote start, alarm and door locks installed. Avital Model 5303 5303L 2 Way LCD Security Alarm Remote.
The door locks will be added later when I decide what I want and how I will mount them.
Anybody have suggestions on a good set of actuators?

Got it installed today. Works great so far. Now to learn all the functions of the remote.
