Bed bolts: Where?
Hey guys,
Working on the bed of my 59 short fleetside, replacing all the wood and new polished stainless strips. I ordered a new stainless bolt kit, all carriage bolts are there but my question regards the 1/4-20 and 5/16- carriage bolts, there are a lot of them but......I'm not sure which holes take the 1/4-20 and which holes take the larger size? I tore all the old bolts out thinking the new kit would have detailed instructions as to where each size would go. Lesson learned on my part. No instructions included. Anyone have a diagram where the different sizes go? I know the six long 3/8 bolts go through the wood and frame. Thanks Tod Last edited by Tod59; 05-29-2016 at 08:54 PM. |

Re: Bed bolts: Where?
I'm thinking that if you check the 5/16 will go along the ends of the bed strips while the 1/4 will run down the rest of the way.
Count out the different sizes of bolts and count the holes and go from there. I'd guess there are about 18 5/16 bolts in the kit to

Re: Bed bolts: Where?
all of my bed strips were punched for 1/4'' bolts, i used no 5/16 bolts on the bed strips

Re: Bed bolts: Where?
On a Ford PU on which I replaced the wood kit, the larger bolts went on the ends of the boards and the smaller ones were in between. Since this agrees with mr48chev, it may apply to Chevys as well.

Re: Bed bolts: Where?
the 5/16 goes along the outside thru your L angle bed strips and the 1/4 goes thru the bed rails. the holes in your strips will tell you what size goes where.

Re: Bed bolts: Where?
It's been 40 + years since I bolted bed strips down in my truck so I am no doubt off on that part.
On the 1/4 inch bolts the longer ones will go at he ends or in the cross rails and the shorter ones will use a washer under the wood between the cross rails
