For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
Need to buy jack for truck. Been running without one for a year, time to be smart and buy something. Scissor jack off ebay? Bottle jack? Something else? What do you guys recommend? I've got a 2WD longbed, 1"-3" lowering springs.
Thanks in advance. |

I have a small Michelin floor jack. It's compact and safer Works real good and they are a decent price

Bottle jack, I think it's a 6-ton. Not ideal but should work in a pinch. Never needed one yet (knock wood).

I don't have a jack or a spare. Had a flat last year and walked home and loaded a floor jack and a spare in my daily driver and got it changed out that way.

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
I used to carry a bottle jack, until my latest truck that came with the factory jack and all the pieces that go with it. I have a spare...with a tire from the 80's....but I don't carry it. I also have AAA and State Farm roadside assistance....
One time my wife got a flat and was waiting on Mercedes to come change it... She told me she had a flat, but didn't tell me where she was. Turns out I drove within a block of her and didn't know it. She waited another 45 minutes for them to come do what I could have stopped and done in minutes. |

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
Get a scissor or screw jack. You don't need to bother with a hydraulic if you don't load the bed. But you will probably get a lower profile with a scissor. I have the original jack and it works fine. I also have a couple 4x4 blocks tossed in the bed of my pickup. But I'm lifted not lowered.

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
I don't think the "modern man" should change his own tire. Like, I just use my iphone, and a tow truck comes. It's OK if I have to wait an hour for that.
(LOL). *I actually know a guy that does just that. He's one of my closest friends, but he shuns any sort of repair work. Yes, I asked him if his "natural equipment" was attached to his body. ![]() My truck still has the original jack. My dad said he used it only once to help some other guy. My truck still has the original spare tire! I would much prefer a wheeled (hydraulic trolley) jack but I have no space to put it. I've had three flat tires in my life on my daily driver and I changed each flat and was on my way in 10 minutes or less. I have changed tires for several women stranded on the road and I even helped a police officer change his tire once. Very few people check their spare tire pressure. I check that on my daily driver (Honda Accord) every 6,000 miles, when I do a tire rotation. I carry two screw jacks in my car but in winter I carry a trolley jack for when I need to put on tire chains. Jacking up each front wheel has cut the time down to 15 minutes for putting on both chains. |

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
You mean there are people that don't carry spare tires and tools? No offense Grumpy or anyone else, I just have always figured that if you drive (especially an older vehicle), you have the basics covered. I mean, I carry some spare parts. Sometimes I just assume too much, and you know what that means...
I use a bottle jack, carry jack stands, and keep my spare aired up. And I've got enough tools on board to fix almost anything... ![]()

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
Ha!........I just scored the original set-up just to have it. Will I carry a spare tire? Probably not, though I'm not sure AAA carries spare tires?
Dog gone it, I wish I hadn't thrown away a perfectly good in-bed spare tire carrier "I'll never add this to the rebuild" ". Whoops....That was long ago. Today I'd sure like the option.

Nope, they will install your spare for you..... but they can't possibly carry one of every type & size.

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
That's what I'd expect. Thanks. I take things too literally, and a post "implied" otherwise. I guess a spare tire on a blanket is in order for any distances. Bet my spare tire carrier is rusted out by now, buried 30' deep at the dump. Maybe scrapped, melted and became a shopping cart. Oh to spare tire carrier.

Re: For those without original jack, what are you carrying in your truck?
Grumpy, Grumpy - no one's trying to kick you off the board. People just have different opinions, here as in the real world. We'd all be better off if we all learned to take those differences less seriously. You're a valuable part of the board here, stick around.
