Slow filling gas tank

My 71 Jimmy takes for ever to fill with gas. It has a replacement tank, what appears to be the correct filler (based on what I see currently on the parts for sale), and no under hood canister. I dropped the tank and put on new vent lines (2) that run to the thing (???) next to the filler tube. From there I have a marine gas tank vent below the floor board (should this be higher). From the filler tube to the tank I removed the length of radiator hose and ran a length (14-16") of marine gas tank rubber tube (same size - 1 1/4?). Any ideas on why it is so slow filling. Please don't ask for pictures. I can't do that.

My 71 Does the same thing and haven't been able to figure it out either??

On my 72' I I don't fully insert the fuel nozzle into the neck. If I do, I can't even squeeze the nozzle to set it on the first notch of the auto fill and I get gas dripping on the ground. If I pull it back an inch or two, it'll take full blast but I still get gas dripping. I usually just leave it out an inch or two and hold the nozzle as fast as it'll go without dripping. Usually the second notch on the auto fill.

On my 72 I have to do the same thing, stick the nozzle in and pull it out a bit. I don't dare leave it to auto shut off, it's a listening game, I stop when I hear the gas coming up to the top, ideally there is no one asking me at the time what year my truck is to distract me otherwise it will result in gas everywhere. I can usually squeeze another 1/2 to full gallon in after that going slow.

Your problem may have to do with the fact that it has a replacement tank. The repros do not come with the proper filler input attached to the tank so unless someone took the time to swap the filler necks from the old tank , which is fairly unlikely there may be a bottleneck in that area since it would have had to been adapted to connect.

My 71 has the same issue. It has the original equipment. It fills slow and it usually splashes over when it is full of u are not paying strict attention

My newly acquired 71 has replacement and the canister return lines etc are rusted and not hooked up. it does what yours does. My other 71 replacement tank lines hooked up no problem,

I have a Hickey 32 gallon tank. It takes foooorrreeevvvveeerr to fill that thing. No way to use the catch on the handle at the gas pump. I can't tell you how many times I have had gas puked back on me. Thinking about adding another vent to mine to try to stop the problem.

My '70 fills really slow as well but I can see that the tank has been replaced by a PO and the fill hose is kinked slightly....it doesn't go from the fill neck to the tank in the proper position so I assume it's not the original neck configuration....

I plan to pull the tank to see what's going on .....I have an old tank with the proper neck that I may braze onto the replacement tank.....
I can use the first catch on most gas nozzles if I don't insert it too deep........

Also if I reach under and kinda squeeze the kink out....it will fill a little faster.....but then again....at my age.....I just don't get in too much of a rush.........as small as the tank is, it doesn't take all that long.
