Speaker replacement - 6"x9" or two 4"? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I found a working GMC AM radio for my 65, but I don't have a speaker. I'd like to so something fairly low cost to be able to listen to the radio. It looks like a 6"x9" would fit, so I was considering a cheap one on Amazon. If it fits this should be fine for a mono AM radio.

So my main question is will a 6x9 fit up there in the original spot?

Another inexpensive route I was thinking of going is two 4" speakers. The benefit here is if I add an Aux input or small Bluetooth receiver/amp I should be able to figure out a way for it to be mono for the AM but stereo for the Bluetooth receiver.

I so far don't plan on modifying the radio as a working GMC AM radio is hard to come by.

Yeah I've read all of those and more but I wonder why no one just used a single 6x9. One post mentioned it but no additional details. It seems like it should fit just fine if I figure a way to mount it.

For a basic stock radio I thunk a 6 x 9 would work just fine. That is close to what the original speaker was. In my opinion but mind you I am no audio expert, I think the two smaller speakers would give you a better sound balance.

Thinking about this more, and as long as I'm running a mono channel audio source I don't think 1 vs 2 has any impact on sound balance. And even if I ran a stereo source, I don't know how much separation I'd hear if the speakers are only a few inches apart.

What I don't know is whether it's safe to hook up a 4 ohm speaker to the stock radio. I believe the stock speaker was 10 ohm.

Definitely use a 10 ohm speaker with your original radio or risk damaging the circuits.
S&M Electro-Tech http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm has good information and technical help on the subject. I used one of their speakers on a Corvair pickup I once owned and it sounded great.
