Carter YF at full throttle opening in resting position?
I am in the process of getting a 1953 GMC half ton running again. The Zenith 228 carb is long gone. I talk to the folk at Carb Exchange and they said a Carter YF will work no problem. They sent me one and I have been looking at it. At rest the carburetor is fully open. It appears that the accelerator squirter arm is holding it in that position. You can actuate the throttle plate no problem but the spring on the accelerator pump arm forces it to rest completely open. Is that correct? Am I missing a return spring of sort? I have never seen a carb rest at full open.

it should not be open at rest. something is missing or installed incorrectly. It would be extremely dangerous if carbs were like that if the linkage or return spring broke

Re: Carter YF at full throttle opening in resting position?
So I called the Carburetor Exchange and told them what I saw. They confirmed that this is how it was designed. I stated that it was very dangerous should the carb linkage come off somehow. The Rep just stated that he knows it looks weird but that is how it came and that I was the very first person to ever question it. He said install it and it should run fine for my application. I will put an additional spring on it to prevent it from ever going to full throttle on its own. Not sure what else to do at this point.

it may be the way that carb is. I looked at several YF's and they are also open like that.

Re: Carter YF at full throttle opening in resting position?
I rebuilt a lot of those years ago but can't remember exactly how they work now and can't find the info I was looking for on the net.
It seems odd that it would have open throttle sitting static and rely on the return spring to hold the throttle closed but that may be the way it is.

yep, they've been like that since back in the 40's. it is weird, but think how many million have been installed and run for years.
