Glide out spare tire carrier??
Picked this up at a swap meet and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it? I would guess it is for the 72 pickups. Anyone confirm or deny? I know the 73 and up could have these.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
I saw that as a dealer option in the back of my '72 GMC owner's manual.

WOW!!! that was made in my town. They are still in business but don't do much work. Mostly RV stuff. Might have to go there tomorrow.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
What a neat idea! The '70's really held some innovation.
The under-bed spare tire location is problematic, especially for older people, and I could see where this idea would be a big help. I like my stepside bed with side-mounted spare simply because the spare is easy to get to yet out of the way. I rather wish modern trucks had a stepside option. Now I've only had three flat tires in my 25 years of driving and none happened in bad weather, night, or when I was in a hurry. All flats have occurred in my daily driver cars. I don't think my dad ever had a flat on my truck and the spare is original. |

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
I'd have to say that is intended for 73 up trucks. This is based on the 5-15-72 drawing date and the 117.5" wheelbase reference.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
Thanks tim, that was what I wondered also. I noticed the wheelbase and thought about the date of 5-72 on it.
Thanks.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
the shop i work in used to be the dodge dealership from the 40s into the 70s. when my employer bought it there was a bunch of NOS stuff up in the attic and there was a couple of those glide out spare carriers in the mix. i will look around and see if i still have them.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
My '72 K2500 has one of those. I'm pretty sure they were available prior to '73. I think I have a brochure showing them.

Re: Glide out spare tire carrier??
My 1949 Chevy 3100 series pickup came with one from the factory .
They're cute but a real PIA when it's raining or a muddy dirt road....
