knixon804 k5 ls swap and one tons

hey guys here is an accelerated version of the past to the present.
My buddy bought this clean blazer last year and brought it to my house for a one ton swap. the swap was 14b/60 combo with open front and spool rear, 4.10 gears. while doing the swap i was standing underneath the rig admiring how clean it was for a michigan k5. i wanted it but the time wasn't right so i finished the swap and lead him on his way.

heres this first trip out when he got it

one ton swap in one day

well this fall he sank it on drummond island and hurt the motor. so i had the opportunity to buy it. so i did!
mods are as follows
dana 60 front, open carrier
14 bolt rear, full spool
4.10 gears
2wd steering box with ORD cross over
37" nitto ridge grapplers
17" KMC beadlocks
custom front bumper with smittybilt 12k winch
305/700r4/208

heres some pics of it over the last year

So now on to my ls swap. i am doing a pretty basic swap using the following:
2005 LQ9 6.0/4l65e
243 heads
BTR stage 3 truck cam
dual valve springs
shoenfeld swap headers
2.5 dual exhaust (mufflers TBD)
91 burb np241 with vss
ict billet motor mounts
walbro 255 fuel pump
corvetter reg
ebay CAI
bp auto harness

1302ls headers

BP automotive harness. these guys rock. this is the second harness i have ordered from them and i am very pleased

2005 escalade 6.0 lq9 and 4l65e trans

i started to rip it apart tonight (11-20-16) hoping to get the old drivetrain out by thanksgiving

Re: knixon804 k5 ls swap and one tons

day 2 of tear down went pretty well. got the whole drive train out. any suggestions on cleaning up the wiring mess in the engine bay? what are all the wires that go to the starter solenoid? im pretty good at ls swaps but i am not well versed in square body factory wiring. is there a diagram i can look at??

cleaning up my engine bay and i cant figure out what these 2 sets of wires are. the first one comes out of the firewall on the passenger side right by the ac wiring, the second one comes out on the drivers side right by the main bulkhead fitting..i dont think either of them were plugged in on my 305.

Re: knixon804 k5 ls swap and one tons

ordered some VHX gauges and the OBD2 port interface from a vendor on here for black friday!

also my cam and springs came in from BTR. their service and prices are hard to beat! i went with black background and white back lighting

lastly i ended up ordering all the stuff to rebuild the 6.0. i wanted to make sure everything is fresh while it was torn down since the motor has unknown miles

How did that huge section of the rear of the block get broken off? I've never see that happen before.

Long story but when I was building my jeep the dowel pin was under a huge bind when the trans was bolted on and cracked the block by the freeze plug. Needless to say it's gutted and just used as an expensive mock up block.

Got the motor all tire down. bring it to the local machine shop to get cleaned. everything looked perfect inside. which is pretty impressive considering it has 270k on it!

Nice! I meant to tell you that the bundle of wires you had in your hand were for the electronic spark control used back then. It connected to the distributor, vacuum sensor (still above it on the firewall with the nipple broken off), knock sensor, a power wire, and a temp sensor I believe. There should also be a controller box for it behind the glove box. You can trash all of it, you won't need it. I'm not sure about the other wire next to the bulkhead you mentioned. What color is it?

Re: knixon804 k5 ls swap and one tons

neat project so far

How are you pluming the fuel system in? In the tank and at the fuel rail?
Are you going to cam off the oil cooler or keep the original lines?
How are you mounting the gas pedal?

For now I am just using a wahlbro 255 inline pump for now because I have it. I will eventually put an inline pump on the tank. I just haven't done enough research to see what pump actually fits.
At the fuel rail I have a return less style set up and a corvette fuel filter/regulator.

As for gas pedal. I haven't really looked at it yet

Re: knixon804 k5 ls swap and one tons

not much to report as my block is at the machine shop getting cleaned up. i did however get my gauges! they look killer! very nice touch to the interior and overall reliability of the rig! i ended up getting the obd2 port adapter for the ecm so i can read otehr things like trans temp and speed since i am running a newer NP241 t case.

on to another subject. i was planning on running a wahlbro 255 pump and corvette regulator inline of the stock pump and tank but i would like to know part numbers and years to run a in tank set up with a newer blazer fuel cell. thanks in advance

No real progress. But these are done! A local guy just started doing this and I had to try him out!
