10 bolt rearend posi question
I am searching for a 10 bolt 8.5 posi diff for a car project I have.
I read that other model cars and trucks come with the eaton type (has the s spring and clutch disks) and some come with the gov lock which has its problems. wondering if anyone knows if trucks came with the eaton type? I know lots of trucks had 10 bolt fronts but I don't know what type they may have had. did any vans come with the eaton type? I know they have 8.5 rears. the year cut offs seem to be 72-89 for 28 spline and 89-94 30 spline. either will work for me I just don't want the weighted gov locker. Thanks |

Re: 10 bolt rearend posi question
I think they are B body cars but caprice impala buick road master and Cadillac type cars have optional 10 bolt rear and some with auburn posis. Not sure the rhyme or reason but thinking tow package or v8 got the bigger rear. Also they have 30 spline and side gears are not interchangeable.

Re: 10 bolt rearend posi question
The problem with finding a rear with the clutch pack type in those years is there probably close to being wore out . Also the clutch packs are no longer available by gm . There is a guy on the net that is producing the clutch packs but they are around $ 250.00 . If you are lucky and get a good one you are good to go . If not you can spend quite a bit on a rebuild . If you are paying someone to do the work you may be better off getting a aftermarket at the beginning . Paying twice to do something gets expensive .
Just wanted to give you some info in your search . I agree with the gov lock if you are looking for a performance diff . If just a mild I don't want to get stuck when off road the gov lock is fine . This is what comes in truck these days . My z71 06 has one and does just fine to get me out of some places I get into . |

Re: 10 bolt rearend posi question
Avoid the Auburn from the late 80's-90's B and G cars, the wear surface is integral to the carrier and once they wear they are very expensive to rebuild.
Gov-loc is great for 'want to get out of the mud/snow' traction, is not designed for drag strip or high power high RPM (disconnects at 25mph). I love mine in my farm trucks. There are factory Eaton types available from the 70's-80's G and B body cars, but all of those have a bazillion miles on them. Kits are reasonable. When I do my 10 bolt I'm going to buy an Eaton type, as I don't need a Detroit Locker for my moderate HP application. A wide selection is available on Ebay.

Re: 10 bolt rearend posi question
the 91-96 b body is what I think I am looking for. I didn't know if they were eaton or auburn type. I would think it is probably easier to find a buick or Fleetwood Cadillac still in a salvage yard with out too many miles on it and hopefully grampa who drove it wasn't a hot rodder! no luck finding 70's cars with 1 around me. the only used ones on craigslist are $250+ from 71-81 f-bodys and im sure a lot of those are pretty abused by now. its just a temporary solution to get a long term project on the road with something that I can enjoy until the need arises to change it.
Thanks for the help. |

Re: 10 bolt rearend posi question
The B bodies will be Auburn units. Also most of those will be 7 1/2".
