Steering UJOINTS

What are you guys using.
I've seen a couple of build threads where people are picking them up from EBAY.
Makes me a little nervous - cheap stuff on a critical component like that.
But .... end of day 95% of stuff made in China anyway ......
plus ...

Re: Steering UJOINTS

Uni-steer has the ones I like the best. They actually lock into the shaft crosswise so it cant slip out unless the bolt is gone.

they all borgeson. you dont absolutely need the telescoping shaft but its safer and a very good idea, and its especially easy to install

you are right to be nervous, being cheap on steering or brakes is a dumb way to die.

Re: Steering UJOINTS

If I was going cheap I'd figure out how to use oem pieces that matched and worked together ugly or no. The stuff works for hundreds of thousands of miles in the rig it comes in from the factory and outside of rag joints I never changed anything. You may spend more time hunting the right pieces than it is worth though. I did that when I subframed my truck in 1981 with a rear steer Nova stub.

Otherwise I'd stay with Borgeson, Flaming River http://www.flamingriver.com/index.php/products/c0005 or the Unisteer pieces and figure that known quantity and safety factor beats saving a few bucks.

Just don't do like I saw in the 70's and butt weld an impact universal joint into the steering shafts for a Ujoint. That wasn't that uncommon on street rods then.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

I used astro van GM on mine. Not as elegant as Borgsen but millions of dollars in engineering design.

Lol ... Yep.
Is the purpose of the telescoping shaft to collapse as well during impact ? I see a lot of people don't install....So wondering.
Also figuring I need a vibration damper right ?

Thanks. Flaming River is even more pricey.

Thanks .... Don't know anything about them ... Safe to use ? Don't need a locking bolt sheering off at 45 around a corner

Yeah .... I really want to use the stock column ...... But I keep thinking back to this. Just finding the right column and making it all work seems a little more than I want to take on .... But I guess it's probably no big deal once you do it. Eg what wiring for turn signals and brakes and so on .... Plus any support bearings ... So on.

if you are using a stock 47-59 column with a bearing added to it my advice its to absolutely use the telescopic shaft. it makes install and setup easier too, because you can collapse it to install after the steering column is mounted. otherwise, something will have to be removed to allow a solid shaft exactly the right length to be installed.

vibration damper in my opinion is a marketing item, I dont think you would even see a difference in a side by side comparison except how much lighter your wallet was. I am sure they have a market though?

Re: Steering UJOINTS

Up through the mid 60's it wasn't uncommon to come upon a wreck and have the driver impaled on the steering column if he hit hard enough.

Collapsible shaft doesn't do any good if it doesn't have the collapsible tube to go with it though.
