Drive shaft question.
I have a 1972 GMC 3/4 ton that had a 402 with a Muncie 4 speed with granny gear. I swapped it out for an 5.3 LS with a 4l60e. The truck has a two piece drive shaft. The original 4-speed had a bolt on yoke. The 4l60e has a slip yoke. Is it okay to use a slip yoke on a two piece driveshaft? It already has a slip joint between the carrier bearing and the rear end. The carrier bearing is mouned in rubber. Will that allow too much movement? Anyone have experience with this issue?
Thanks |

Re: Drive shaft question.
Ehhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, maybe, but better be sure that the slip yoke stays lubed and smooth sliding or the carrier support will take the brunt of the driveshaft travel

Re: Drive shaft question.
I think it will work OK. There is a poly carrier brg. that doesn't flex as much available. It might work better.

Re: Drive shaft question.
My c10 was originally a straight 6 tottering, but was 350/350 when I got it, but it has a slip yoke and a 2 2 piece drive shaft.

Re: Drive shaft question.
If it's a factory 2 pice driveline with th slip in the rear shaft it will already have a heavy duty carrier bearing. (The poly bearing won't fit). Almost every modern 2 piece driveline in a pickup has a transmission slip yoke and a slip in the rear shaft. Just make sure the slip and stub are in good shape on the rear shaft. The shop that does your drive shaft work will be able to easily check all of thisfor you..... you are having a drive shaft shop rebalance your shaft as an assembly since you are changing the trans yoke... right.

Re: Drive shaft question.
Thanks for all of the replies. I already had the drive shafts shortened. I had to shorten the front one because of the transmission change and the rear because of axle change. They balanced everything as a unit. It seems to be working fine. I have a small clunk from the rear end that I am trying to chase down. Wanted to make sure the two slip joints weren't a problem.

Re: Drive shaft question.
Sometimes the trans yoke will bind when stopping. This is why a lot of newer trans yokes are zinc plated. You might try a little anti sieze in the trans slip yoke splines. This is probably not your issue, especially with 2 slips but its very cheap and easy to check.
