How long did it take...
To find your truck?
It seems like I've been looking forever. Just curious. |

Re: How long did it take...
I'm not in a position to do a full restore, so with my list of must haves and wants in mind during my search it has taken me just about two years to find something I think I will be happy with. Didn't get everything I wanted but got very close. I was unable to inspect the truck myself but did have a friend do it for me. So as long as there are no surprises I think I will be happy. Having it shipped in the next couple weeks. So long story short 2 years.

Re: How long did it take...
I searched Craigslist almost daily within a 300 mile radius for about one year before I found my truck. I also kept my eyes open locally but never saw any "barnfinds" or decent trucks for sale. After looking at so many trucks though, I knew the minute I saw the ad for my truck that it was the one I was going to buy. Turns out, the guy I bought it from is one of those skilled barnfind hunters and has had a fairly continuous supply of very nice trucks for sale.

Re: How long did it take...
2 days, saw the guy driving through our rv park / campground where our 5th wheel resides.
I'd had a couple beers and yelled "hey when you want to sell that thing let me know"! 2 days later it was mine. |

Re: How long did it take...
Usually find lots of CL, so sometimes it's just a matter of minutes lol But it's usually just about watching & buying what I like and what I know is a good enough deal where I wont lose money.

Re: How long did it take...
When I started looking outside my city and state then my odds increased big time .... my criteria was from 67-87 though . As long as it had a short bed and a big block .. and when they get put up for sale they sell quick ... u gotta be ready to pull the trigger .... good thing is the longer you look the more cash u can save . Took me like 6 mos .

Re: How long did it take...
Spent 10 + years trying to buy my 70 shortbed before I got it. Took 2 years to buy my 69 longbed after I first saw it sitting in a yard filled with trash (It never moved in that 2 years). Saw my c20 sitting on the side of the road and owned it 15 minutes later. Also own a shortbed frame, took 6 months after I saw it to buy it.
Once I looked for 2 years for a 68-72 cutlass/skylark/ lemans and had almost given up when someone in a 72 cutlass pulled up in my driveway and asked if I knew someone who would like to buy their car. Ya just never know, wait till you are happy with the car (or truck) and price before you buy. It will come along if you are persistent and always looking. |

Re: How long did it take...
About a year, originally looking for a short bed. Pretty hard to find that was still stock. Eventually expanded my search to long beds. Then about a month to get it, long story involving a road trip and car accident.
Everyone on the forum patiently reviewed all my prospects and celebrated with me when I found one.

Re: How long did it take...
I was on here 2-3 years looking for a truck I never did find, a nice restorable shortbox bigblock Sierra Grande. Never did find one in all that time, so readjusted and wound up with a big block Longhorn Sierra Grande.
Depends on how specific your wants are - in my case wanting a GMC made it a fair bit tougher.

Re: How long did it take...
Although I've owned a lot of classic Chevy and GMC trucks, I really wanted a Blazer or Jimmy. My wife kept asking me to put it off, because we had twins and then I went to Iraq for 14 months and life was just complicated. On the day she said, "I think it's time for you to get your Blazer" I went out and bought it the same day. I guess I was really fortunate.

Re: How long did it take...
I needed something that was basically a complete truck with no work required, but with enough room for improvement that I could tinker with it. It had to be a shortbed to fit in my garage (and because I just like them more), and I didn't want a cut down one. I also needed it within a certain time window (had to arrive before my first child did!)... From when I was able to start seriously looking to when I bought it was about 3 months.
I also found that looking across the country was necessary given my constraints - For anyone trying to buy one that you can't get to to check out yourself, I used Road Ready Inspections to check it out for me (http://www.roadreadyinspections.com/) and was really happy with their service and the report they provided me. |

Re: How long did it take...
It took me about a year and a half. I was originally looking for a 62-66 K10, but after a year of not finding one decided to expand my search to include 67-72.
I found my 67 K10 on CL, and the more I looked at it the more I liked it. Owned it a week later. |

Re: How long did it take...
After looking for about a year I had the perfect 67 lwb slip through my fingers, not for a lack of trying either. I too got impatient after that and picked up the 67 lwb I have now. Kind of regret it as it needs more rust repair than I wanted to go through again.

Re: How long did it take...
Mine kind of found me. Truck was owned by my brother-in-laws mother. First saw it about 15 years ago. Told her if she ever considered selling let me know. About 8 years ago she said if i still wanted it, $1K and its yours. Took me about 2 seconds to decide. Had it shipped 2 weeks later. Just lucky.

Re: How long did it take...
I've wanted a '67 SWB small window to bookend my '65 SWB big window for years. While I didn't actively search craigslist like a hawk I did check a couple times a month and just kept my nose to the ground to the community. Quite surprised I never came across a single decent candidate until a couple months ago. A xmass time craigslist truck, the owner had it priced high and it wasn't selling. Went to take a look, a pretty decent mostly original truck. Wanted one a bit nicer but with this one being the only one in all this time I made a cash offer $2000 less than asking. 2 weeks later he accepted.
Money was the reason for the wait. If you want your truck and you're willing to pay you could put out the word through several channels and have what you're looking for in your driveway in 30-60 days. Steve weim55 Colorado |
