New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
How do I get this crap off without damaging the original metallic paint. Used a heat gun on low setting to pull old yellowed vinyl trim off.

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
Ditched the bed rails and installed new front break pads. Looks like the old ones were full metallic. They were squealing really bad. Seems like the new pads did the trick. Also repainted the front rally wheels. Still have the rear wheels to do. Rubbed the drivers side paint out. Doesn't look to bad for 31 year-old paint. Slowly but surely get a few things done. Going to replace the front mud flaps with some black plastic ones. Yeah, I know the flaps look like crap but I live on a gravel road and their going to have to stay for now.

There is a special pad that is made for just that. Body shops use them on their air grinders to remove that stuff, doesn't affect the paint. Sorry I don't know the name or a link to it.

Yeah low heat with a gentle hand to remove glued on trim.......3M makes a adhesive remover in a liquid wipe/rub style and they also have a wheel for a buffer to do the same.......but I have always left it to my detailer to do that kind of stuff for me since they are asked to do it all the time......click on the link below.....

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
I've got one of those eraser wheels. Good call on the link. However, you can probably find less expensive versions than that 3m one, and maybe local. Got mine at WESCO who is the paint supply chain out here. Mine was threaded and I wanted to use a drill motor so I had to get the piece it threaded into that I could chuck into my drill motor. They are pretty easy to use and shouldn't build up enough heat to hurt good paint. When it got hot it started to melt the eraser and leave residue on the paint but the paint didn't care.
Neat truck. My first SquareBody was an '91 that I bought in 1991 and was that color. Have always liked the gray. |

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
i have used the eraser wheel and it works well. 3m has one part #7498, motor guard has one part # e4000s. i use with electric drill and not to fast so it doesn't burn the paint.

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
Thanks to everyone who responded. I'll give one a try. I hate cheap plastic trim anyway. Truly sad GM cheaped out and started using that crap. I have a 70 GMC truck with the original aluminium trim on it. Still looks decent. 47 years out in the weather.

It has been a long time since I used one of those eraser wheels, but if I remember correctly patience is needed. It is not a quick and easy process. Or....I could be wrong. When I used one it was on 4" stripe down the whole side of an S-10 and they were old and cracked.

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
Anyone have a recommendation for the door glass outside weather stripping? Mine are completely dried out and cracking. Any manufacturer fit better and look like the original part?

Heat gun and a small, thin plastic scraper. I've seen that done before.

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
Will post pictures of the bed rails. They're up for grabs if anyone is interested. Driver quality. Some pitting in chrome. No woodgrain on the rails. Will post pictures soon.

Re: New ride. 86 GMC High Sierra Short Bed
Now I have to pull old trim molding on the passenger side and do it. It's not difficult. Just have to work kinda slow. Kind of looks like a ghost stripe on the drivers side. Well at least it's off. I really despise that cheap plastic trim. "If it ain't steel it ain't real" as the old saying goes. Lol
