Officially hate Rustoleum

Painting new wheels for my 72, gloss white of course. Used Gloss White Rustoleum, for one, it took forever to dry between coats, then when it finally dried to left a rough finish, so I lightly sanded it with 1000 grit paper and tried putting another coat of paint on it only for it to react with the "dry" coat under it and started to crackle... ugh, something simple turned into a big mess, stripping all the new paint off and will try again with Krylon or something else.

Any suggestions short of powdercoat?

You didn't mention primer or prep or humidity in the air.

you say short of powder coat that would probably be the most durable... also might try a paint and body shop. sand blast the old paint off

The original Rustoleum does take a long time to dry and requires a fair amount of time before re-coating. However, in my experience, it is more durable than the competitor's paints once cured.

I used it on my wheels and they turned out great. First picture is the original spare. Second is after blasting and Rustoleum gloss white.

Hmmm.........I've used the exact same paint on wheels and had no problems, laid out flat and still look good over a year later, stored outside.

Hmmm, I used Rustoleum Wheel Paint and it's smooth and tough as nails.

I did my whole bed in rust-oleum on my inner bed that is. I applied two coats roll and applicator. One coat spray then sanded. Then two more coats of roll on. I cut the canned stuff for roll on. I sprayed the strips that go between the wood. It seems like the roll on is much more durable than what was only sprayed. You can see my bed, and I documented what I did in the thread link below. Plus I just updated my Tung oil thread with a one year update you can see the wheel wells still look great. Anyhow, the rustoleum has fared very well, has no oxidation or fading and I never waxed it. The truck lives outside. you could probably do a rim with a foam applicator. Or test on an equally odd object. My license plates are rust-oleum. So is my back bumper. Heck, I'm the rust-oleum king! Not sure that's a good thing!

Also, here's a link to my license plate. I sprayed the yellow then waited a week before I sprayed the black. Still looks good, though I only expect 4 or 5 years before I have to respray. The plates were more of a test for masking. I will use a high quality automotive paint next time I do the plates though. Anyhow, I spayed out doors with my face to the wind so over spay would not lay back down on the plate. It came out pretty good.

I'm in DFW right now on vacation and it is beyond humid, that is the problem. When the humidity goes away, rustoleum works very well.

Unfortunately my wife and 4 kids don't fit in it, so we are in the 02 suburban There is no shortage of trucks here, but I've only seen one 67-72 truck so far which blows me away, figured I'd see lots of them! It was parked in the stock yards and I snapped a couple quick pics of it.

Me and paint don't get along that well, but I'm thinking some tests on scrap w/ primer and various timing of coats might be in order.
My last wheel coating was a vast waste of money w/ derusted wheels and screwed on powdercoat. I'd thin and spray myself next time, or do the same w/ real paint.
In the TX sun, the Rustoleum will start to disappear in a few years.

DALE - try these guys, they've done all my pc locally, they are in the Crowley/Burleson/Mansfield "plex" ha... They did a nice job on some wheels for me for a decent price. There may be places closer to you.
If paint is preferred, yep, concur with the rest, gotta wait til the dog days pass. It sucks.

I also do not like Rustoleum as I have found it sprays out in droplets which make a mess. The "engine enamel" has worked well for me though.

I think Krylon lays down well but isn't very durable.

I am currently trying Eastwood Extreme Chassis Paint and I really like it (satin).

I do not have any ability to use a spray gun so it's spray cans for me.

I am almost finished with completely painting my truck with rustoleum. I have gotten many complements so far. I've been a krylon guy in the past and I do think krylon is easier to use, but I couldn't find what I wanted in krylon. Ill be curious to see how it holds up over time.

And you are using it out of spray cans? *I suspect you are using it out of your air gun, right?

Nope, out spray cans. I don't own a spray gun. Think lipstick on a pig. My truck it full of rust and bondo, and wouldn't be worth repairing all the rust, so I'm not putting a lot of effort into it. Just going for a 50/50 truck, looks good from 50 feet and 50 mph. It actually has come out better than I expected, and I think I can make it look even better.

I like Rustoleum Rusty metal primer. I spray it right over the rust & the next day I top coat it with Ace Hardware premium paint. It seems to hold up for years.

I'm a fan of rustolem. My whole truck was rattle canned with it over a year ago. Holding up good. Patina'd it.

High humidity is a pain to deal with.

Two done! two more to go! Looks good for now!

You can see I have started pounding out my dent. The shredded tire completely took out the brace rod that holds the front part of the wheel well
