54 GMC fire truck

Ok guy's, I'm in the process of buying a 54 GMC 4500 fire truck cab. I believe they are the same a the 1/2 trucks.

Q1. Is the cab the same as the 100 series cabs?

Q2. Is the grill and hood the same as the smaller truck?

Q3. What other parts off a 4500 series will work on the smaller trucks?

Any help in these areas will be greatly appreciated!

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

Wait until more knowledgeable guys post but I am thinking that hood and fenders are different. The cab may be the same but the hood and fenders are different I am pretty sure.

Here is a link to a thread on the subject. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-chevy.743582/

And really, you should be rebuilding it as a fire truck, what fun that would be!

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

the gmc 4500 is a 1 1/2 ton truck..the cab will be the same for all ad trucks from 1/2-2ton..the front fenders and hood are not...the 4500 front end is longer and wider than a 1/2-1ton truck...I'm not sure about the gmc grill being the same...so in short only the cab will interchange..

I've been reading through his thread trying to find out how he used everything! Not sure if I want the bigger front end! I'll use the cab and try and find a 100 series dog house. If the grill is the same I'll use it and what ever else fits a 100 series.

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

Since yu want a smaller truck would a 80-87 1/2 ton K10 work? Front end is definitely wider as i found out.

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

I'm going to keep the fire truck paint and marking but put it on an 1/2 ton frame. One reason its already blown apart and the other I don't want a 2 ton truck! LOL

1. maybe depends on what engine is in it.
2. no
3. nothing. seat maybe.
4. I assume you mean GMC 450 not 4500

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

Cab should be the same,

Hood and fenders are different as the guys said earlier.

The 400 series grill will be 1-1/2 inch or so taller than the 100 series if they match what happens on Chevrolets. You should be able to use the bars from the 400 in a 100 grill surround though. That is if you want to go to a 100 series nose.

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. From what I have found is. The fenders are the same length as small but are wider and taller. They also round up more than small, the hood has more of an arc to the sides to match the fenders and is longer. I am not sure if the grill would fit a small truck. The cabs are the same. I have been trying to get my truck beside a small GMC to compare. Any pictures of what you got?

Re: 54 GMC fire truck

lower50s...I thought the big fenders were a few inches longer as well...? are they not?

LCA...really would like to see some pics as well...most big old fire trucks I've seen have a big square hole cut thru the grill to run a pump..is yours that way...if so a grill may be hard to come by for a gmc

When I met up with "99 to life" last fall he pulled out a regular chev fender and we held it up and they where the same length. Other than that they are way different.
