Found myself a 72 Jimmy!

Hi all,

Wanted to introduce myself. I used to have an 80's Jimmy. Lately I've been on the lookout for a nice, stock and relatively cancer free 70s Jimmy.

Found one on Craigslist a few weeks ago. 80,000 original miles, father passed away and son inherited it in the 90's and kept her mostly garaged (son was in his 50s when he inherited it). Son was a mechanic and kept her in good shape as a memory of dad. Now he is getting really old and no one one family wanted the truck. I'll look after it.

I just had the steering, brakes, engine, transmission, axles and driveshaft inspected and repaired where needed. Mostly okay, a few minor issues here and there. She drives really well. Have a bit of work with the ac (door to heat exchanger is stuck).

Next is fixing body and paint followed by trim and interior.
Going to keep her as close to stock as I can. Keeping stock color and no lift etc.

This weekend I had new tires mounted, the old ones was at least 20 years old. I kind of like these Yokohama 31" tires. And the ride is great.

Earlier in the week I had my mechanic to through the engine, transmission and the driveshafts. He found nothing major and did just an service. The fuel pump was leaking through the air vent so it got replaced.

Went out for a back country ride when I suddenly smelled a strong odor of gas. The new fuel pump was squirting gas through the seam that goes through the middle of the pump.

Managed to call a friend and get home. An hour later I had a new fuel pump installed (first time I've done it, thank God for YouTube)... It's a $20 O'Reilly pump, I think it's an ac Delco. So far so good.

Any particular brands you guys recommend for mechanical fuel pump? I would love something really reliable, I'm scared of the made in China quality of the action Delco I just put in.... It's the same brand that broke after 1 hour of driving.

Also put in a new battery, the old one was going bad.

Good find on the Jimmy. If you're looking for USA made pumps, I think your only options are to go with one of the performance aftermarket like Edelbrock.

Red Rock area? That's where it's at, I'm having it parked at my good friends place.

I found it on Craigslist in Reno and my good friend went over to check it out and ultimately bought it for me.

Hoping to find a good body shop to remove a few of the dents and rust repair followed by repainting it in the factory original color. Any advise on good body/paint shops in the Reno and surrounding areas?

I hope to get most of the paint/body done over the winter in Reno. Need to do a bit of work on the interior but I feel much more comfortable doing that work myself, paint and bodywork I need help with.

Hi, a pic of the spid is attached. The color is option "151610 orange".

Carter makes a fuel pump here in the USA (I think they still do at least) that won't break the bank like an Edelbrock or Holley unit. I always used these before I was fuel injected.

Yeah, Red Rock. Just live down the road from your friend. Bought my 72 K20 5 or 6 houses down from your friends house. Lots of body shop here, big price range too. What price range?

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to restorations. Willing to pay for money for a decent job.

I'm hoping that fixing the body dents, the little bit of rust on the quarter panels and rocker panels and paint will get me at or under $6k. What do you think? Is that realistic in Reno?

We should meet up next time I'm up there. My friend Alan that the car is parked at is an advanced home beer maker, I designed and built his brewery. Sounds like an opportunity to have a beer and talk about trucks!

I have two friends that had their vehicles painted this summer. 57' chevy truck, little bodywork and single stage paint for 3500.00 and 62' Bonnieville no bodywork, block sanded and two stage paint for 3500.00. Depends how much bodywork you need. mrtoni is right, some body shops like the quick buck, insurance work. Let me know when you are up this way, I could go for a beer or two.
