clunk in front end 4wd

Hello all,
during the restoration of my v2500 i have;

replaced all the ball joints and rod ends.
leaf springs
steering gear
removed the frame brace from ORD
new u bolts bla bla bla.

anyway, i developed an occasional clunk when turning a few months ago. I whought it was the steering gear but a swap to a new box had the same sound.

I spray lubed frame joints and springs and i still have this clunk.


Any ideas.

Any chance it could be the front drive line hitting the transmission crossmember?

Depending on the sound of the clunk. It could be axle joints have a bad spot and now and then they line up just right when turning and make a clunk sound. Sounds like they were replaced though during your rebuild. I have also seen spring mount bolts loose and cause a clunk. Does it do it when stopped and turning or only when rolling and turning?

The axle joints are new spicers and no clearance issues.

The driveline is clear and also all new joints. It really sounds like the frame near to the steering gear but i see no movement.

sway bar bushings? mine is doing it too, and that is what I need to replace on mine....frame end.

Mine are new and i have ORD disconnect. I will pull them and test drive.

You might want to look at the frame area around the steering box for cracks. That could cause the occasional clunk.

My clunk turned out to be a loose jam nut on the tie rod. sounded much worse than it was.

Update,

I disconnected my sway bar and I still have a clunk. Not as bad as before but it still happens.

My guess is it is somewhere in the body/frame/mounts and the sway bar was putting more trees into what ever joint is popping.

I had the front clip off for my rebuild so maybe there is a loose bolt or piece of sheet metal touching something.
