Moulding Purchase Discussion

I will be ordering moulding / trim for my truck in the next week and am looking for advice in general. I will be putting 67/68 lower trim with 72 upper trim on the truck, my questions are...

Should I buy the metal clip kits instead of using the adhesive ones that come with the trim? I'm leaning towards the metal clips.

Mar-K seems to have alot of votes for quality, who sells Mar-K trim? It seems like I have read that you can get it a bit cheaper from some places besides Mar-K's website.

What about the 72 tailgate trim (the wide "Chevrolet" piece), I can't find that on Mar-K's website. Who sells a quality tailgate piece in black (not woodgrain)?

Do the '72 tail gates with the wide "Chevrolet" trim also get the lower thin trim piece? I'm sure my tail gate had the upper thin piece, but I can't find any lower pieces in my stash of parts.

Drip Rail Moulding, I have read of problems there with the aftermarkets not fitting well, who to buy from? I'm set on it, just need to get the best I can.

LMC sure has a nice catalog, I'd love to get this stuff from one place, but I will break it up to avoid the risk of bad parts. So, any advice on places to buy any of the trim items would be great.

Mar-K has the best aftermarket trim available. I would stick with that even if it costs more than the others. I think you could go with either style clip but the metal clips will probably outlast the adhesive on the plastic ones. Try Trim Parts for the tailgate band. I had one from there and it was pretty good in the black finish. I haven’t seen any drip rail moulding that looked very high quality.....most looks flimsy and doesn’t fit very well.

My '71 Cheyenne with the wide woodgrain band did not have the lower trim, hope this helps. I purchased the new band from Truck and car Shop and it looks very nice.

I hope nobody from LMC is reading this, but I use their catalog to find out what I need and then order where the quality is better. But they shouldn't get too upset with me, I order plenty from them when I have to... Anyway, note that the factory approach was a combination of metal and plastic. If you use the plastic clips, it is absolutely worth peeling the existing sticky backing off and replacing it with 3M two sided trim tape (a tip I got from leddzepp and it worked well). It sounds like a pain in the butt, and it is a little bit, but not too bad.

I just received today my 68 lower trim I ordered at Cooper Restorations, it is the Mar-K brand and it's $670 for the longbed. Looks like jewelry and arrived in a wooden crate! They are pretty picky about the quality of the parts they sell and have great customer service. I will put it on the 68 in my avatar.

Oh, and I opted for the metal clips because I heard the trim will stick out a little with the plastic ones.

I bought and installed the Mar-K kit (from Brothers) and it is some of the nicest stuff out there. Complete with metal clips, hood, tailgate, etc.

I did NOT use the clips though except for the hood itself, I bought the best 3M tape and installed with that. No new holes, no drilling, no fuss.

There is a thread here where member turp mcspray put ALL repop brands and oem trim side by side. There was very little difference in the quality between all of them. The difference wasn’t enough to justify the substantial price difference between them imo. I used counterparts brand from the truck and car shop and am very happy with it.

Thanks for everyone's input up to this point, keep it coming. And not to highjack my own thread, but why can't I see Perpendicular's attached photo? It's just a little square with an "X" in it. I can see Lanman's, however.

I just installed lower wood grain molding and used the metal clips that came with the kit. I purchased it at Classic Industries and very happy with the quality. The clips were easy to use you just have to make sure the holes are centered. I had to drill a few extra to install. .a1

I only use the metal clips with studs where I already have holes. The 3M red backed tape works great. There are holes on the inside of the wheel arch area. I use those and the 3M tape. Works great.

All the holes so I’m so glad to hear real world experience about the 3M tape.

I had ordered the lower mouldings for my 71 from LMC and when they came in most all the pieces were bent /dinged up pretty good. They were just thrown in a way to big of a box with no bubble-wrap or anything to keep them from being tossed around. These pieces are pretty thin to begin with, so i called LMC and they were nice enough to promptly send out a second set that was usable but it to has a few dinged pieces and was not packaged any better, so i called again and they refunded my money. I was able to correct the bent pieces. Also had to reuse a lot of my old clips because the ones that came with the kit do not fit well enough.
