6 Lug to 5 Lug drum brake conversion
I have a 64 2WD that someone else converted the rear end to 5 lug drum brakes. The front is still original 6 lug drum brakes. I need to now what I can use to convert the front end to a 5 lug drum brake system.

Don't bother with the 5 lug drums; go ahead & convert to discs up front when you change over to match the rear. There are kits offered by CPP, ECE & others that will let you do it (even lower the front with drop spindles if you wish) without doing the yard hunting to scrounge up the parts to change over. Then again, if money's tight & time is cheap I'm sure that you can scrounge up what you need in your local salvage yards. Maybe someone on the board has everything you need for the asking...

No such thing as a 5 lug drum brake for the front of a GM truck. They went to 5 lug in 71, the same year as they went disc. They've been disc since.

My plan for my 66 is to eventually convert it to discs & I figure on going 5 lug simply because of wheel choices...

You can look at my signature and see what I think about 6 lug drum brakes. First thing I do on each truck is update the brakes.

Yep, that's what I expected! BTW, is the new avatar your truck? I haven't posted enough for one yet but here's a pic of the 67 that my son is anxious to get his hands on...

That's a little truck I did about 5 years ago. I usually do one every couple of years. This one is my third full resto. As soon as the drivetrain is done, I'll pull the whole truck apart for the full nut and bolt tune-up. I've already got an attic full of nice sheetmetal just waiting.
Don, you've got a nice little truck. Short beds are my favorite.

If you decide to go with the 5 lug disc brakes in front with stock height or drop spindles we can help. You can view our new conversion parts here.
http://www.gmcpauls.com/60-66_brakes.htm We broke the kits down so that you can buy it in stages rather than having to buy all at once for those working on budgets. GMCPaul |
