Tarpaper substitute ?
!954-3100, stock fuel tank behind the seat.
Just putting it back in. The tarpaper pads are in poor shape / missing. What would be a good alternative ? I have 1/8" cork gasket sheet. Or, I could fold up some 15lb. roofing felt and nearly duplicate the original. Or an asphalt shingle (grit removed)? What would you use ? Thanks |

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
Thanks Greg.
This stock stuff is much thicker than any felt I have available. I'll fold up some of the roofing felt to an adequate thickness. Cheers. |

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
there is a real heavy industrial roofing felt...doubt that big box stores have it....folded should be fine...

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
i believe oem was 100 lb roofing felt, pretty tough stuff
cork, rubber or plastic would probably work as well

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
That sounds about right Ogre. I have some 30lb which is a bit light, so instead of tripling that up, I just put 1/8" cork gasket sheet under it. I had quite a surplus from an auction.
On another note ... dead center of the floor, under the seat is a strange shaped hole through the floor. Looks similar to the pic. What was it for ? and what was used to plug it ? Might explain all the mouse turds under there. That's a rough sketch, I'll get an actual pic if necessary, Thanks |

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
I'm guessing under seat drain hole....mine has it to...it shows it in the assembly manual but doesn't say what it is...mine has it to...

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
I wondered if it could have been a way to "tie up" the torque tube driveshaft prior to engine installation. Maybe some sort of twist and release holder...seems like it is in about the right location best I recall.

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
doubtful....I think the entire chassis was built first...then the body installed...just my guess though. ..

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
The padding he asked about... what it used on 1950 tanks too or was the tank just strapped in?

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
I would suspect it was under all of them.
To keep metal to metal contact from happening. Good idea, imo. |

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
I thought so, I must have missed it when I looked in the LMC catalog. Anywhere there's contact there should be something right? So where it sits and where straps go...

Re: Tarpaper substitute ?
There was none under the straps on mine, just the 4 spots where it sits in the cradle. That's where the weight is and likely where the cushioning is mostly required should there be any movement.
