OK- 68 WINDSHIELD INSTALL WITH TRIM. WHAT A PITA !!! Pretty frustrated i will admit. Wife and i installed rear glass with trim last weekend, no problems. Using new glass for front along with original trim and precision rubber seal. Trim keeps popping out in 2 places each attempt. Taped better each time , same result. My question is what do u pros think about using some good 3m molding glue just on trouble spots to help secure trim to rubber seal prior to next try ? Let set a couple days to dry. I can't think of any harm it would do. Or any other suggestions are surely appreciated!!!

Another thought - How about leaving the corner trim piece off till the end. That way the side and top can be more independent and one not pulling the other one up out of the groove in rubber seal.

Are you sure you have the right seal for the trim you have? There two different seals for the deep and shallow stainless trim. If you have the correct seal and are using original GM trim you shouldn't have any problems with it.

It is a major pain. It took us 4 tries to finally get it looking good.

As mentioned, the earlier trim will be a whole lot easier to install. The grove and trim have to match. The later trim is a bit shorter and just makes it that much more difficult to install.

I got it (finally) using KY Jelly in places. If you're interested in how we did it let me know and I'll go into detail.

Yeah its the correct seal (68- early style) with original trim. Its just popping out in a couple spots when i pull inside over the lip. I was using windex as a lube and it really did make it easier. I ll try the ky next. No other tricks to learn i guess, just have patience. So what made the difference chad ? I need any advise/helpful hints at all !!!

What I kinda found out is the windshield glass HAS to be able to move in the gasket as you pull the glass down into its resting place. The cavity in the cab where the glass 'sits is obviously tight around the glass to make it seal and the problem we found is once the gasket gets in that cavity and gets in a bind it kinda sticks to the glass and the upper lip. There's nothing to allow it to kinda wiggle down into place.

What I did is take a qtip and put KY Jelly down into the grove where the windshield slides into the gasket. You (obviously) wouldn't want to get it down into the grove where the trim piece goes.. Just that grove where the gasket and windshield glass fit together.

Go ahead and get the gasket on the glass, (it's going to want to slip around but we know that) then wipe off any excess that might be on the glass. Put your trim in as you have been and rope, tape, etc.

Then I used quite a bit of the KY Jelly around the inner lip and cavity where the windshield drops in. Don't put it o n the gasket, I just wiped it around the whole lip. Make sure you have someone with you because it's going to make the windshield want to move around.

Get the upper corners in first. Start from about the middle part of the cab and work the windshield up so the corners get 90% seated where they'll be in the end.

I started roping in from the top. Pull it down a little at a time switching sides. Pull down to where it starts rounding the corners at the bottom.. this is where you want someone with you because the whole time the glass is going to want to slide down (ky on the gasket and cab now)

Make sure you have the secondary lip pulled in as close as you can get it, then start roping in around the bottom corners. Now since you have the movement in the gasket, I think you'll see a huge difference at this stage. The windshield will slide in the gasket moving up without having to really pull and stretch your gasket to get it to go in. That's what pulls the chrome trim out of its grove and makes it poke up.

Yeah, the KY is water based, it will just evaporate. It's not in a spray and get all over the dash, etc. I was hesitant about vasoline because it's petroleum based. I didn't like the idea of it being on the paint and drying under the seal.

We had to cut little notches in the trim on my truck and gently re-curve it. The reproduction trim was simply not bent correctly. Once re-shaped it stayed in the gasket, and went right in. Compare your trim to the glass, you may find it is not the right shape. Bent up on the passenger top corner, as I remember...

And yes, we notched it on the back side that fits in the groove, not on the face... just helped to re-curve it a little...

I struggled with this and ultimately tried it twice before I got it. I used tape to hold the trim but instead of going all the way over the seal to the other side of the windshield I pulled it tight on the front of the glass and stopped at the windshield channel. That way it left the inner seal free so I could manipulate it without disturbing the outer trim. Then I used a lot of lube (I used a Wurth product called rubber care) and a "dent pulling" suction cup on the inside of the glass so I could keep pressure on while working with the seal. There are different camps that will tell you to start at the top or bottom, I put the bottom of the glass in first and worked up. Keep at it and it will go in but not without frustration.

YEAH BABY !!!!!!!!! Got the PITA windshield in and looking good !!!!!!! I started over, had no choice once trim popped out again. 4 tries with 19 year old stepson, that knows EVERYTHING , last weekend before "REGROUPING". FOLLOWED ALL suggestions and the k y lube worked great. That is a main key i think. If u r pulling too hard on rope, trim will pop out. Wife listens a whole lot better than 19 yr. Old. I might just have to keep her ! Went in first try today . Tks for all the help everyone. In the end i saved $100 on the glass and $150 or so on installation. Plus my helper and i can skip therapy this week, we've already had it !!!!!!!!!!!

Woohoo ! I think that binding in the windshield glass-to-seal groove is why most people have (including me) have trouble with it. If you can get a little movement on that glass grove it's much easier for it to drop in place vs pulling so hard on the rope.
