Wiper motor replacement
Greetings to one and all. Hope the holiday has been good to everyone and all fingers are still attached. I replaced the wiper motor on my 78 GMC STEPSIDE since the current motor would not stop spraying water. The reman wiper motor from summit worked fine while I was testing it. Then it blew the fuse and another fuse and another fuse. I only switched motors, why is it blowing fuses? The reman wiper motor doesn’t run at all now. I put the original back on and now it’s not running either. It’s summer in N.C. and it will rain. I need dependable wipers, your help is appreciated. St1

Re: Wiper motor replacement
Fuses are blowing when you power the wipers on?
Blowing out just as soon as you plug one in with the ignition on? Does the fuse blow with the wiper motor plugs disconnected?

Re: Wiper motor replacement
I am going to leave the fuse out reset the arms to the correct parked position then install a fuse and see what happens. I have reinstalled the motor that will not stop spraying water. I routed the hoses in a loop so as to not make a mess.

So I had to put the old one back on. The reman unit will not run. I will send it back and get another one. Putting the grill back on and calling it done. Grill reinstalled due to another project (a/c charge and trianry switch install).
Thanks for the reply. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Wiper motor replacement
That looks really nice. Hope you get some years out of it. I recently replaced the wiper motor/pump on my 78 and it worked fine for a few weeks, then started squirting for as long as the wipers were on. Had to pull the water supply hose. I'm hoping to find a better one than O'Reilley's sells next time around.

Re: Wiper motor replacement
A Dorman 603-131 tank with the AC Delco 89001120 pump are the stock 85/86 CK parts. IIRC the tank fit on my 1976 washer tank mount.
Rather than the Tee you can use a Wye in the washer fluid lines to avoid the U shaped bend. VW # 1J0955873D will work if you can't find one on the HELP rack. The 98-07 GMT800 washer pump and reservoir GM 1288113 will likely fit next to the radiator on the radiator support. They hold around a gallon of fluid. You'll need to liberate the Metripack connector from your donor but these look fairly attractive to me. The other part that might be attractive is the combination Washer and rad overflow tanks off the later model GM Astro Safari vans. Take your tape measure to the Pick-N-Pull.

Forgot to say the way it works is I just push the OE pump button for as long as I want the pump to run. Looked into a 12 volt timer to make the pump run for a few seconds after pushing the button, but it was kinda pricey.

Those Wyes are in the A2, A3, A4, A5, and A6 Jettas, Golfs, and Rabbits. The B5, B6, & B7 chassis and the Faux Beetle. The Audi models based on the VW A chassis had em as well. Just snag one used.
