Power steering lines on 67-72 swap
Ther have been a few threads on The power steering lines on a swap, but I cant find any info specific to the 67-72’s.
The “stock” gearbox has an 11/16-18 inverted flare female and the 6.2 crate pump requires that Earls extention fitting to get the lines past the pulley. I bought the Earls fittings (looks like it will work great) but because the inner fender covers the gearbox fittings, it doesnt leave room for the 11/16 to 6an adapter and a 90. I dont want to trim the fender at this point (almost done with the build). No one makes an 11/16 to an 90 degree fitting. What has everyone done? At this point I think we’re going to resort to buying a stock 72 power steering line and using the inverterted flare fitting, building new steel lines to adapt to 6an..... Any other suggestions? |

I just went down to a local hydraulic shop and had them make me lines. I’m not running any inner fenders and no pump extension. Just a adapter to go to 6an. Clears the pulley just fine.
I just used some wire and mocked up the lines with the bends and it worked out perfectly. |

I cannot confirm this but I heard you can just unscrew the fitting from the back of your old pump and screw it into the LS pump, allowing you to use your old line.
Can someone confirm or deny this? |

Yes, this will work as long as you are using a truck pump. The smaller type2 pumps found on cars it wont work.

You also want to change the internals as well because the ls pump will put out more psi and make it feel real light ....mine is a truck and I just swapped and used a regular hose!

I bought a new line and cut the end off to mock it in place.
Then since I don't have a TIG, i used a local mobile welder and had him weld the old line with the new style end on it. He charged me very minimal for the job.

If you have room, use the stock line and crimp a new end on it.
I've seen others use -6 line with a 90 on the pump end, but instead of running directly toward the engine they go toward the front of the truck and loop them more to get under the fender. |

Maybe the 6an 90's I had were "longer" but I couldnt get the "loop to the front" to work either......my inner fender was still too close. My backup plan was to bend the fender up to clear, but I ended up using the fitting and most of the tubing off the stock line and flaring a tubing to 6an fitting on. I used the black coated PTFE line from Russel. I had never seen that stuff before. It ended up looking like a stock line. Which I liked. I haven't taken a good pic of it yet, but you can barely see the tubing in this pic.

I don't remember the brand, but I just bought an adapter fitting for mine to go from flare to O-ring, and put a few small bends on my original 1971 line, and it fit well to my LQ4. Mine is from a Hummer H2, I think 2005. I am running a redhead steering box, no issues with any over it so far, 350 miles on the setup.

I just cut my line, the hard line, and used a compression fitting to join the two together, now that being said, i have not tested it yet, but the fitting should hold...

I went with hydroboost, so I took the stock hoses (metric and standard 71's) and had them reworked at my local machine shop with 6AN PTFE hoses. This was not a cheap way to go...
