LS gas tank for 65?

Hey everyone, my dad and I are doing a father/son project by LS converting my 1965 C10. We were wondering where can we find a gas tank that will work with the LS conversion? Musclerods doesnt have any and I cant find any info. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

You can buy one made for your truck and made for EFI in tank pumps:
http://nolimit.net/products#!/Fuel-T...tegory=6157547
If you can weld you can make a new stock tank work:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clp-ufpk-fi (although you can get it cheaper at Tanks I think).
One of the favorites here is Boyds Tanks:

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

On a recent EFI conversion, I ran a low pressure pump out of the tank to a surge tank, which fed an external high pressure pump. Return goes back into the surge tank, and overflow goes back into the fuel tank.

Advantage #1: You're not cutting up an original gas tank, or compromising the internal coatings.

Advantage #2: You can run on almost fumes, and never starve the high pressure pump of fuel.

Disadvantage: Complexity.

That sounds interesting.....do you happen to have a thread about how you went about doing this?

So, the surge/reservoir tank......what is the capacity of that tank and where did you locate it?

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

One car was my Lotus Super 7 replica, and it was at the back of the frame near the tank. I autocrossed this car on slicks, and I wanted to run as light on fuel as I could without starving the pump.

One was my '77 Silverado, and I tucked it inside the frame rail just ahead of the dual tank switch, with an AC Delco electric pump feeding it, and a Ford F150 pump drawing from it. This setup was cheaper than buy two EFI tanks and two EFI pickups and two EFI pumps.

On my V8 Pontiac Firefly I built the fuel tank with a sump inside that WAS the method for fuel to get from the left to the right side of the tank, in the hopes of limiting starvation without running a second pump.

I usually make them about a liter in volume, I'm not sure there is science behind it. The best is tall and narrow, so the outlet is always covered with fuel.

There are a number of aftermarket manufacturers that have a "Fuel Center" which your low pressure pump fills, and a high pressure pump inside does the rest. I have not used one, so I cannot speak to how awesome or wretched they are.

example: https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...0003/overview/

My plan on my '61 is get an EFI Suburban tank and run it at the back.

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

Make it easy on yourself and go with Boyds, with the pump and get the filter/regulator kit at the same time. I bought my Boyds through AZPerformance, good people.

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

I use a stainless Vaporworx tank from Rick's Tank. It uses a Gen V Camaro fuel pump module. Easier to plumb because there is no return line. Tank can run down to near empty without fuel starvation issues. Have about 50k miles on it.

I purchased the tank through Matt's Classic Bowties. I use the bed fill version PN 055003. You need to scroll down to the very bottom on the GM tab on the Rick's Tank site. I am not using a controller. I'm using the 5th gen SS pump with a retro-fitted fuel pressure regulator.

raic65:

How far below the frame rails does the tank sit? Can it get installed/removed without removing the bed? Sounds like a great tank.

Thanks, Cris

Cris,

I'd have to go and measure. The tank is installed/removed from the bottom. Does not require removing the bed.

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

Thanks Robert, I'd like a tank that can't be seen. Thinking of doing a FI conversion on my I-6 (Holley Sniper Two Barrell) and need a tank. I like the no return line approach.

If you're looking to install a sniper and using a different tank than the Rick's Tank, look at Holley's Retrofit Returnless Fuel Module. I used it in my brother-in-law's 66 mustang. He is running the sniper on a warmed-up 302. I didn't want to deal with a return line on it either and used the retro-fit module. All you do is plug the return port on the sniper unit.

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

Robert:

Thanks, that’s a good find. I may go with a custom tank to keep it tucked up on the truck. I don’t need more than 14 gallons and many aftermarket tanks seem to focus on capacity not size (height hanging down).

Re: LS gas tank for 65?

Captain, thanks:

I talked to these guys at a Good Guys show. That tank hangs a little low for my taste and requires a little hacking of the frame to fit. They know it’s not perfect for our trucks and are at least thinking of a dedicated tank. The more people that ask about it the faster they’ll move!
