Cutting in Headlight relays.
I need a bit of help on cutting in a 30 amp headlight relay. I discovered that when I hit my high beams after about 20 seconds that cut off, I learned that I was overloading the circuit. I was told I needed to add a relay inline to the dimmer switch. I was sent the drawing below. The drawing was cut off at the bottom by mistake. So I’m not sure what to do with pin 87a.
Also, do I need a relay for the low beams as well?

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
Only issue with this is it uses a generic plug in at the firewall. It is not oem. I used a couple spade connectors. mine kept coming unplugged anyway. Hard to beat for $30 though. everything else fit great

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
Here's a diagram I made a few years ago to bypass the original wiring harness completely. The original harness only has to turn the relays on this way so they're very little load on it. No cutting or modifications to the original wiring harness this way.

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
I don't. The only difference would the wires to the headlight plugs, and that would depend on the type of low beam bulb you're running (low/high- two filament, or low only-single filament).

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
I don't think 87a is used at all for the relay conversion but id follow the diagram above, I did this on my 67 and the lights were a lot brighter

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
I did mine a bit different from what you have shown. It is closer to what they have done in some of the links. I used 2 relays - 1 for high beams, 1 for low beams. I put the relay under the hood on the drivers side fender, and grabbed the power from that junction block.
30 - Power from the junction block. Fused, 20A. 85 - Ground 86 - High or Low from the floor switch 87 - To the headlights I replaced the wire between the relays and headlights. I used 16ga wire and new connectors for the headlights.

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
So where did you buy the dual 87 relays? They are not just 87 and 87a but dual 87?

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
Been getting them from Del City. Good price and have been reliable so far. Both 87 pins are powered at the same time so use one relay for low beam and one for high beam to split power to the separate bulbs.
https://www.delcity.net/store/Dual-C...91795.h_791800 They also have un-wired relay sockets for making your own harnesses. https://www.delcity.net/store/5-Pin-...90144.h_790150

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
I got the new harness in and called Classicparts to see if they recommended upgrading the headlight to halogen when I explained what was happening (lights go out after about a minute) he stated it was not a relay issue and the new harness would do nothing to help and would make it worse? WTH?? I have no problem ordering a new headlight switch and was going to do so as a matter of course (someone said that it should be changed) but I did not expect CP to say the harness would not work??
I'm lost......

Re: Cutting in Headlight relays.
Someone at Classic Parts didn't know what they were talking about.
