Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice

Hi guys,

I appreciate everyone's help, but I don't need advice from the people that don't remove the engine and transmission together and feel like giving a lecture. I'm looking for advice from the people that do remove them together.

I'm ready to pull my old 327 and I'm pulling the engine and tranny together. I have a 327 large journal and an NP435 (Chrysler Corporation's 4 speed with a granny gear). The cover on the NP435 is REALLY tall. I can't seem to get the cover off and my buddy said we could just drop the cross-member and it'll clear, but I was looking at it last night and the cross-member is riveted, not bolted.

I realize that a picture would be extremely helpful here; however, I forgot to grab one before I left the house today.

Does anyone know how to get the NP435 cover off or how to make it clear the firewall when pulling it while it's attached to the engine? Or is this plan hosed and I'll need to disconnect the two?

Yup!
Your plan is hosed!
Trans won’t slide out the front with the crossmember in place.
I’m affeared you’ll have to separate them.
Been there, tried that!

Bad part is to get at the rivets you need the motor/tranny out of the way.

Damn... Well I guess that solves that. It'll probably be easier to do anyways, I was hoping there was some secret trick out there... Thanks for the quick reply!

Could you do it if you pulled the radiator core support out so that the assembly doesn't have to tip so far? Breaking the two apart seems easier.

Thanks for the tip, but I agree about the ease of the other route. It seems like it would have been possible with a different transmission, but because of the NP435 I'm a little stuck.

No, that doesn't work either. The transmission is literally about 3/4" too tall to fit between the bottom of the cab and the (riveted) cross-member. The only way it would work would be to either drill out the rivets on the cross-member, or remove the cab mounts and jack up the cab.

The good news is that those transmissions are only held in with 4 bolts.

So I pulled the two that attach the transmission to the cross-member, where are the other two? The bell housing?

I removed the seat/carpet and hump cover. I had an unfortunate neighbor friend shimmy the transmission back from the bell housing from below. I helped support it from above as it came back. Engine comes out pretty easily after that.

Since it sounds like you're going to separate the transmission from the engine, maybe this will help. I almost forgot about this write up I did awhile back.

I was able to locate the four bolts last night and I removed two of them, but now I've gotta dig out my dad's transmission jack from his garage...
