Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
Guys,
Would like to inquire your thoughts on what to use on manifold bolts into alum heads. The obvious choice is anti-seize but that will vaporize at what +/- 900 degrees? Is a nickle based anti-seize a better choice? Cant find any info on AC/Delco P/N 5613695 what they use on O2 sensors with glass beads in it? Getting there, next stop, exhaust and get this finally driving! Thanks for your input!

Re: Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
I have always had good performance from the regular Loc-Tite brand anti-seize on steel manifold bolts in my Dart aluminum heads. Have never had a bolt seize or gall. I use the same stuff on my spark plugs with equally good results.

Re: Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
The regular anti-seize will be fine. If the bolt threads on a N/A small block get to 900 degrees you will have lots more problems than bolts gauling their threads. There are high temperature varieties that would be called for in turbo applications.

Re: Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
I have used anti-seize with copper (I believe) with good results. Just what the local parts store carries.

no bolts. studs only, glue them in and try never to remove them. Coated stainless lubed with bee's wax on installation to avoid galling.

Re: Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
Thanks for replies. Motor builder says anti-seize will work just fine, guess I was over thinking it!

Re: Exhaust manifold bolts in alum heads??
I was told a long time ago by some old time engine builders the best thing to use is Malox antacid liquid form yes ant acid you get from CVS /Wallgreens
Ive been using it for years on my cars, trucks and motorcyle exhaust. they built race engines and told me it has a higher heat tolorance then anti-seiz. I just pulled off my motorcycle exhaust after 5 years that had aluminium heads and stainless studs and nuts and they came off with ease was it malox dono but it still had it on the threads after 5 years. |
