Moving driver seat back?
I'm only 6'0" and 190lb so not a giant and only a minimal gut but I feel too close to the steering wheel? has anyone ever looked into remounting the seat or moving the seat on the existing brackets because the driver seat is as far back as possible? The steering column is original as far as I can tell.

Re: Moving driver seat back?
I replaced my seats, not a great option. But comfortable for me, I am about your size...Best bet would be to spend a couple hrs, and un bolt seat and try lifting or moving back with some blocks. Try and find a more comfortable fit.

Re: Moving driver seat back?
I'm 6'2" log legged and I was too close to the steering wheel too....
On my '70 I found that there were two tapped holes directly behind the existing rear seat mounting holes....they had screws in them but they came out easily.... In the front I took two pieces of ¼" thick steel plate about 3"x 4"...drilled two holes that matched the two front seat mounting holes....then I drilled two more holes in the plate.... the same distance back as the difference in the holes I found at the rear....on the underside I welded two nuts...I was able to move it back about 2"...really made a difference in seating position.... I'll look for some pictures...

Re: Moving driver seat back?
This is a picture of the plates...I used some flat head screws at the front to keep the carpet from bulging up....
the open holes is where I welded nuts underneath then used a shorter mounting bolt.... sorry I don't have a picture of the rear holes but they were already there hope this helps

Re: Moving driver seat back?
You could also have the steering column short. I think 70fleetside (if that his correct name) can do it

Similar post with additional pictures. I did this on mine as well and it was a big improvement. BP |

It seems that we both got lucky....although, if the holes hadn't already been there, I would have probably just made another offset plate for the rear.

Re: Moving driver seat back?
Just another option, I moved the brackets on a 88-94 seat to the rear holes and drilled new holes for the front holes ( I added some bracing plates underneath). It moves it farther back and has tons of rearward movement when the half top is off.
Good luck, Rg

Re: Moving driver seat back?
I am 6' 3" but have short legs. I already had a truck mount set that was cut down in the back. I raised the front with a spacer and still have room to move back. This puts my eyes in the middle of the windshield and I can use the arm rests now. I'm going to match the other seat but not wrecking the stock brackets.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...teering+column
I have buddy buckets out of a Dodge Durango in my Blazer W/ a 15" wheel, tilt column and have plenty of room.... I'm your height and WAY bigger around. I shortened the steering column in my '71 PU... not a bad job. Have belly clearance even with the 19" stock diameter wheel. Still not real comfortable on long drives because of the distance between the seatback & the gas pedal. Yeah, I know it's because my A$$ is so big.
