67-72 lengthened E-Brake cables
I've got a 71 K10 shortbed with a 4" lift and manual trans. I need to get rear brake cables made and I know Inline Tube will make them but need the length. I don't have the originals to mock up for correct length.
So does anyone have a length they used for cables? They need overall housing and overall cable length. |

Yes thanks. At least I have something to work with. The note under the cable asking for 5" longer. Is that what you had made? If so what size lift was it for? Thanks

Yeah, I had In Line Tube make them longer. Stock lift, I have a '70 Chevy K20 & a '71 GMC K25. you would think they'd be the same but the GMC frame mount for the cables in in a different location. The "correct" cables were too short.

Wow I would have put money on them mounting in the same spot. Thanks again for the pic and info.

Re: 67-72 lengthened E-Brake cables
Must be the difference between HO52 and Dana 60. On my '72 K/20 Highlander I lifted 6" I asked for 4" longer than factory. That was perfect. I don't think I've ever had to do anything with the cables when lifting 4", always been enough cable to work.

Re: 67-72 lengthened E-Brake cables
Well, Special-K got me thinking so I went out & took some pics. The '70 Chevy has a HO, the '71 GMC has a D60. the parking brake mounts to the backing plate on both rears at about the same place. The frame mounts for the cables are in the same location. (I was wrong about this) The only difference I could see is the front spring hanger. It's 2"-3" taller on the GMC. Based on that it I'd guess that the same cable would fit both.
But, I do know this - the stock cables were not long enough. I know there's no bed or cab on the frame and when installed they will sag the suspension some, but with the cables bolted to the backing plates they wouldn't reach the frame mounts. I don't want the cables under strain when the suspension is unloaded so I had them made longer. (5" may be too much, will check when the truck is finished) Top pic is GMC, bottom Chevy: |

Re: 67-72 lengthened E-Brake cables
Also, the Chevy, with the shorter hanger, had 2" lift blocks on the axle. So, the two trucks should be the same. I thing Inline Tube made the cables too short. I called them to confirm length but their customer service was less than helpful. They were clueless or didn't care. I also posted up here to see if someone could confirm stock length - I don't remember the results of that (I think Special-K posted some info though)
Also, I had to pay to get the cables lengthened. I'm not bashing Inline, they make beautiful parts but my experience with them was not enjoyable. |
