Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I installed a 4.8 from a 2007 GMC Sierra with a 4L60E transmission with a Lokar column shifter and it is super. I have been running it without a neutral safety switch, and now realize the Lokar BL 1400 U neutral safety/backup light switch will not work without modification. Has anyone adapted one of these to work, or do something else? Thanks, Tbrown

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I use a stock nuetral safety.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I get that, and I just looked, and the stock one is on there so I just have to figure out how to wire it in. Thanks.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
This is the the harness on the 4L60E transmission that you would think the power goes thru for the park/neutral start and the backup lights. Can I run power in and out for the starter and backup lights? Does anyone know the exact wires to use?

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
That isn't the plug a 2007 should have, that's the older one that used two plugs. Yours should only have one bigger plug on it. That said, you can wire the back up lights straight to the switch, but to use the neutral safety function part of it you will need to wire in a starter relay. I can tell you how to wire it, but first you need to look and see exactly which switch you have.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
OK, nova 71, Thanks for the info. I see what you mean on the bigger plug. I downloaded the pinout and made a picture. Haven't got back to working on it, but would appreciate knowing how you wired yours. Don't want to make a stupid mistake now! Thanks, Tbrown

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
Back up lights are simple, ignition power to the pink wire on pin 11 (on the NSS connector) then the gray wire on pin 10 goes directly to the lights.
The neutral safety part is a little more involved since you need to add a starter relay to keep from burning up the switch straight away. The purple wire that comes from your ignition switch that you currently have going to the starter solenoid needs to be hooked to the pink wire on pin 12 (on NSS plug). Then the dark green wire on pin 1 will go to terminal 85 on the relay. Terminal 86 will go to ground. Terminal 30 will be constant power from the battery and then 87 will go to the starter solenoid.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I used the stock GM switch that was on my 4L60E for both reverse lights and neutral safety switch. you can picked them up new relatively cheap too. try rock auto. i purchased a plug for this switch with pig tail i think from rock auto? Install it over the shaft with 2 bolts and pin it out . There are 2 different style plugs and wire diagrams so make sure you get the correct one for your switch. There are about 10 wires on the switch most of those illuminate the P-R-N-D-4-3-2-1 indicators. you wont use those. You will just use the ground. and the hot wire when in " P" and the hot wire when in "R" - Very simple.
If I remember correctly- the after market type switches only allow 1 or the other function not both like the OEM. Good luck

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
Started sorting out my wiring and mounting the relay for the neutral safety switch. all is going well so far and found all the wires I need and won't have to drill any more holes in the firewall. Going to wire up the back up lights first to make sure I am on the right track. I don't mind wiring, but really take my time so I don't have any issues. Thanks for the advice Nova 71, hopefully I can cross this project off my list in a couple of days. Tbrown

Finished wiring it up today and everything works fine. Just have to tidy up the wires and get everything in loom. Thanks again Nova 71. This site is awesome! Tbrown

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
So does anyone know how many wires in the harness on the neutral safety switch are actually used besides the pins 1,10,11, and 12?

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
Pins 4,5,6,7 and 8 are also used. Pin 7 is a ground and the other four wires go to the PCM. So nine wires total will be used. There are a couple extra wires that are for the shift interlock, but unless you have a factory column, that will be hard to hook up.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
So the two wires I need in the NSS are pin 12 pink (12VDC) and pin 1 dark green (ground)
and the relay. I take it this is the park position only and not the neutral position, so the engine will not start in neutral, correct?

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
No, it will start in park and neutral. If you used the shift interlock wire, pin 9, it would only start in park, but I don't know why you would want to do that.

The purple wire that comes from your ignition switch that you currently have going to the starter solenoid needs to be hooked to the purple/white wire on pin E (on NSS plug). Then the yellow wire on pin G will go to terminal 85 on the relay. Terminal 86 will go to ground. Terminal 30 will be constant power from the battery and then 87 will go to the starter solenoid.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I know this is an old post and I have looked all last night and this morning for a NSS wiring diagram for my 4l60e that has the two plugs. This is the best one I found and hope I got it right.
The picture shows how I am taking the wiring to go from looking though a ton of forum posts. If I am wrong please correct me, do not have a column for my truck and was going to buy a new one with the NSS but found the 4l60e had it on the shift arm. Prefer this since the column I want does not provide a nss on them.

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I did the same thing you are about to do. I did not have a steering column neutral switch so Went with the one on the trans shaft. I had to change my shaft as my 460 came out of a Camaro and it had a shifter switch. Anyhow I am looking for my wiring dia. when I find it i Will post it. I had to buy the pigtail also along with the switch. Search one of my prior threads (8-8-20) I think I show how I wired it.
Make sure you use a relay to put power to your park and neutral switch. If you don't the amps will smoke your switch. Last edited by kglowacky; 12-06-2020 at 07:50 PM. |

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
I am digging into how to hook up my nss and back up as well.
I have a AAW harness and I think I have a van tilt column I have not seen the switch on the column but need to look closer Can I add the switch on the column if it is not there ? or do I need to add the switch to the 4L60E I also have a BP auto engine harness |

Re: Nuetral safety switch for 4L60E
There are a couple of ways to add the NSS. If you have a van tilt, then it should have a switch on it, although the first van tilts didn't have them, but they are not that common. But, a van tilt has the switch too far up, so it will hit the brake pedal/column mount unless you shove the column all the way into the dash. You can cut a new slot in the column and the shift tube, but its harder to do with the column assembled, but I have seen it done, so I know it can be done, but definitely easier to do with the column taken apart, downside is it has to come all the way apart, which if you haven't done it before, can de a daunting task, but again, very doable with persistence.
The other way would be to to add the trans mounted switch and wire it through a starter relay, which is a little more wiring. Also, depends on what transmission you have. Cars have a short shift shaft that won't accept the trans mounted switch, so bear that in mind as well.
