Axle Seal / Wheel Bearings
I bought a 1954 Chev 3100 truck and started working on the rear brakes.
After removal of the drums I could see that it had leaking axle seals. I ordered all new brake hardware (brake shoes, springs, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, rear axle bearings and grease seals). I removed the brake hardware and pulled the axle. I then pulled the oil seal and compared to the new one...something is wrong. The bearings and axle seals I bought are too small. I'm thinking I have a 1 ton axle under my truck based on the fact that I can count 10 leaf springs. I took the following measurements: Axle tube opening: 70.33mm / 2.76" Old oil seal: 70.39mm / 2.77" New oil seal: 61.3mm / 2.41" Part number National 450666 New bearing: 61.25mm / 2.4mm Part number National R1500EL Since the parts I ordered for a 1/2 ton truck are too small, I'm thinking I have a heavier duty axle under the truck but need help identifying. The 10 leafs in the springs are a clue. Is this a 1 ton axle? It does have the enclosed drive line. Thanks in advance for help. |

Re: Axle Seal / Wheel Bearings
I looked up a 1955 chev 3100 truck, and the National wheel bearing is RW507ER.
Outer diameter 2.8346". May fit my axle tube of 2.767". (press fit) ![]() This may be the one .... The vehicle ID indicates H54 ........so not a 1955. Who knows. Any thoughts? |

Re: Axle Seal / Wheel Bearings
Below are pictures if the "National" oil seal I pulled.
I haven't found any oil seal with an OD of ~2.8". All the oil seals for 1954 and 1955 trucks are 2.41" that I have found. |

Re: Axle Seal / Wheel Bearings
After doing a lot of research, I've been able to come to the conclusion that there's 2 different sizes of axle bearings and seals for these trucks from many suppliers.
One size is 2.41" OD. The other size is 2.78" OD. I just happened to purchase the 2.41" OD parts before I had the axle and seal pulled. My axle tube requires the 2.78" OD parts. This made thing very frustrating, but - it's not a required daily driver and it can sit and wait for parts. I can find many other things to work on ![]() Hopefully this will help others in the future. |

Re: Axle Seal / Wheel Bearings
Thanks for following up. You had a 50/50 chance of getting the right ones, funny how that seldom works out.
