235 head install

So I’m tackling this today. Wish me luck!! While I do this today, does anyone have good advice to give me?
So far I’m gonna do:

Clean bolt holes
Spray copper spray on block side of gasket
Drop the head
Torque head bolts
Install thermostat housing with now thermostat
Water pump
Radiator hoses
And valve adjustment if needed(which I’ve never done before)

Rocker lash (valve adjustment) will 100% definitely need to be done. Not tough if you're this far!

Thanks! I adjusted the valves but for some reason they are really clattery, I can hear them while I’m driving. The truck even makes a stuttering or sputtering sound every so often at idle. It runs good though, and starts right up every time. I can’t figure out why.
I did the intake valves at .006 and the exhaust at .018



If anyone knows what’s going on please let me know. And I did them at TDC and at 180 TDC like I’m supposed to..

Are you Double Dawg Sure you started with #1 on COMPRESSION & not on Overlap?
Is there a timing mark on the front damper?
The way I do it start with #1 on compression, Make a mark on the pulley @0 degree TDCC. On a straight six cyl engine make two more marks on the damper evenly spaced. (4 marks evenly spaced for a V8) Adjust #1 cyl & then the rest in order (153624) One more rotation to the next mark should land you where you started on #1 TDCC & you can check #1 again.
If you tire of this you can always pop a set of Hyd Lifters in there!

I always adjusted the valve lash on solid lifters with the engine running at operating temp. I don't know 235 specs for lash, but you'll want to make sure .006 and .018 are correct or it will have an affect.
I did my 305 v6's valve lash running and it worked out perfectly. With solid lifters you should hear some tapping or clatter....if they are silent they are to tight.

Yes they do clatter, but damn they are pretty intense, I can hear them while I’m sitting at a red light. Sounds like one or 2 or knocking.

I did do .006 intake and .018 on exhaust but no I’m wonder if I did it on the compression stroke. I’m not sure how to find that.

This^^. It’s a bit messy but pretty foolproof. I cut the top off an extra valve cover to contain some of the oil but you can get by without that.

Awh man I’m not sure. There are no marks on the pulley.
How do I know if it’s on compression stroke?

Oh yeah I was reading about going hydraulic.

Do I have to change the rocker arms ?
