Door Top Seals - Yes/No?

So, we are having a debate at the moment, as to whether or not the '73-'74 Squares used a Top Seal on the doors.

My '74 didn't have any when I purchased it used. . .
Some suppliers sell them for the '74 and some do not. . .
I looked at a pair of replacement doors to buy for future needs and they had the seals. . .

So I say they were supposed to be on the truck and maybe mine were removed at some point for some reason. Why else would manufacturers make them for a '74 if they were not supposed to be used?

This weather seal goes across the top of your trucks doors and seals between the upper door and the cab of the truck. Fits Chevy Reg. Cab & Crew Cab, Blazer, Suburban & GMC Jimmy. These seals help to stop wind noise and water from entering the cab. Sold only in pairs. Requires weatherstrip adhesive.

GM did stop using them at some point. Cost down, would have been the reason. But since the doors are the same, from 73-87, they can be installed. I have some for my 86.

The ones you have do they glue on or have the bolts on the ends

The only ones I have found are glue in only. Not sure but the screw in style "might" just need a screw hole drilled/tapped in the door frame. Even if they are "molded" rather than a continuous roll, I can't see where it would be an issue since the doors are the same profile.

Mine are both. They need glued on and they have the tab at the end, that gets a screw.
Update: I forgot that I had pics of them, with the part numbers, for Presicion.

I thiink I remember Keith posting that these extra seals were used when customers complained about wind noise, or when the automotive press were getting a vehicle for a test drive. I will be getting them for my 83. I have good door seals and drip rails but the passenger door leaks like a sieve when the wind is blowing in a particular direction.

And then, immediately after that when management asked for cost reduction ideas they were the first thing to go.

Back in the day my 80 had wind noise at the tops of the doors, I assumed it was normal. In 84 I purchased a new truck and was impressed it was so much quieter. Then I noticed it had an extra seal at the top which the 80 did not have, I inquired at GM and they were available and were glue on, and had I known I could have installed them on my 80 if I still had it.

So, got the upper door seals from Precision and I have a question:

Based on the photo below, and assuming the flat part is the bottom of the seal, which side (short or tall) goes against the door frame and which side faces the cab?

Also, how far down each side of the door should the seal go? These are not screw on, so I don't have any reference to work with.

That’s the wrong part number, it’s 1110 78. What you looked up is 1110 73

Is there an advantage to one style over the other? I have the stick on ones on my truck. They work pretty good, i do still get some wind noise through the doors though. Seems I'm getting some noise through the actual door vents.

Dave, I just put one of those on my driver door and it definately has helped with wind noise. I am not going to suggest an answer on which way they are supposed to face because I suspect I may have put mine on backward. As to how far down each side, I took mine from just below where the window frame angles down to vertical at the top of the door panel in front. Stretched the rubber seal a bit as I worked up and over and it did come down the back of the window frame to the door. Sorry, I don't have a picture at the moment.

I will also say this is a 2 man job. The adhesives are supposed to be allowed to set up a bit so I did the whole strip at once. It gets messy and sticky. You need one person just holding the free end up out of the way as the other applies the seal to the door.

Thanks for the confirmation! I was test fitting to determine starting points and it was apparent that once the glue was on, it could become problematic quite rapidly!

I heard back from Greg at Precision. He said that the taller side goes against the cab. Makes sense as I look at the profile. . . the taller side follows the crown of the cab and is more "crushable" when the door is closed.

Always good to make sure when using adhesive!

I put them on my 81 due to some slight water leakage and air noise. I didn't realize they were not used on every year. I have aftermarket doors, that proably would seal better with some adjustments, but I put these on and it seems to solve most of my problems for now. I'll get around to the door adjustments eventually.

This is the driver's door. I just followed the pictures in LMC catalog and the service manual, drilled 2 holes for the anchor screws, then added the gasket sealer to hold them in place.
