64 C20 crossmember swap to 66 C10?

Hi, I’d like to get my 64 C20 to front disc and better/softer ride. Will swapping in a 66 C10 crossmember work? I realize I’ll still need to do the work swapping components, but as a starting point will that work? I’ve found a 66 complete cross member for $150, I’m hoping it’s something I can do and then upgrade bits and parts later. I just want to get mine rolling and driving on a C10 suspension now and I can do the rest as my wallet allows. Thanks in advance for all your input. You always come through for me and I sincerely appreciate your brainpower. “Tony V in the OC”.

Yes a '66 C10 front suspension will get you going in the right direction but $150 seems high to me for something that would otherwise just be scraped. I would think you could find a '73-'87 front suspension for $150-200.

Re: 64 C20 crossmember swap to 66 C10?

I agree with Captianfab, I picked up a complete 73 C-10 suspension for $200 and the guy even removed it loaded it in my trailer and handed me ALL the nuts & bolts he removed from it. That was here in the central valley of California. I kept searching craigslist until I found what I was looking for. As a bonus - if you can get ALL the brake lines the master cylinder, vacuum booster & combination valve (proportioning valve) with just a slight bit of tweaking it's a direct bolt in for our trucks & it looks factory because it is.

Make sure you get Captainfab's master cylinder bracket & power steering box brackets - both EXCELLENT pieces & very reasonable

the attached pictures are of a 73 suspension installed in my 64. That factory oblong hole punched in the frame (forth picture down) is in the perfect location for the hard line through on the disc brake change over.

Thanks Shortbox. I’ll go ahead and patiently see what I can find. I did get a message from 1960chevypanel said he’s got one. I’ll see what year it is and what comes with it. I appreciate both your and CaptainFab’s input. Both my booster and power steering brackets from CaptainFab are dying to get installed. I’ve been gathering parts, slowly for couple years and this is final piece to get project started. Patience will pay off.....

I love your pics. Hope mine turns out as nice, but doubt it on first iteration. Thanks again. Tony “V”

I used this thread :

.
I got a complete 79 disc to disc for $100. I put that one in my 66.
And I have 76 disc to disc for my 65 that I got for $150.

Re: 64 C20 crossmember swap to 66 C10?

Tony "V",
The A/C set up is a Vintage air system. You probably can't tell but my truck was mostly built from junkyard parts and craigslist finds. Tilt column came from a 72 Chevy van off eBay for $119.00 with shipping, the radiator recovery tank/windshield washer combo came from a Ford truck - Pick-N-Pull 1/2 off day. The electric radiator cooling fan Used Lincoln Mark VIIII - again Pick-N-pull 1/2 off days, Interior A/C vents 65 Chrysler again Pick-N-Pull 1/2 off days, suspended throttle pedal & modded 73 Power Brake pedal, again Pick-N-Pull 1/2 off days.

When I got the A/C vents several years ago CorvetteJim hadn't yet started reproducing his vents otherwise I would have gone that route.

I guess is what I'm trying to say is if you can take your time and keep your eyes & mind open you can build a decent truck from others junk. I've added power windows, 4 way flashers via the 72 van column, 1 1/4" front sway bar from a 76 1 ton C-30, foot-well courtesy lights from a 73 C-10 and a bunch of other stuff mostly from nosing around at junk yards.
