Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
My new 72 pickup has a buzzer alarm when the ignition is off and the headlights or park lights are on.
Is this 'factory' or something that's been added ?? I've just not seen this in these trucks before.

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
I believe it's added. It was a kit you could buy in the dealer parts dept.

Also available at auto parts stores. I still have one I've never installed.

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
I appreciate all the replies/info.
Another question, truck also has a little power supply cord (see picture) attached next to the battery. Anyone know what it's for ?? trouble light ??

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
I think it is likely to be a connection for a battery charger/maintainer. You would have to see exactly how the wires to it are connected to know for sure. Have you looked under the seat, in toolbox, glove box, etc. to see if the charger is there?

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
021-0123 is the part number for the battery tender that is meant to connect to that, if you would like to get one. We sell them at my work, is why I know.

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
Instead of (or in addition to) a "Headlights On" buzzer or chime, what about a timer? Several seconds after the truck is turned off, the lights automatically turn off.

I have the LMC headlight buzzer on my truck. It works just fine and is definitely loud.

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
That's funny because I put one on my truck because I drive it in the day. I always drive with my lights on, day or night. It's a good idea.

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
Funny. I disconnect all buzzers on newer trucks when I get them. Annoying. Mr. Opposite here

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
Funny indeed! I love my old quiet plain jane dark when I shut the lights off truck! I don't walk away wondering if the lights will turn off by them self either...My old Jeep does that periodically and it always freaks me out and makes me wonder? But that's another thread in another forum...

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
I wasn't able to condition myself to remember to turn off the lights, no matter how many times I returned to a dead truck that needed a jump start. And it's been hard on the battery. I drive my truck often, so there are 5 or 6 opportunities per day for me to forget and put myself in a bad situation. I have thought about adding another battery tray and do the aux battery thing, but don't really want to spend the $300 to $500 it would cost to do that. Turning off the lights without a reminder is just a skill or habit that does not develop in me. Hey, I can do plenty of other things, so I guess it's ok if I can't do that. I did want to have a pleasant sounding reminder, so at least I have that.
Someday I'll re-wire the truck to have delayed automatic power down of the light and other non-switched circuits, but I don't want to do that until I find exceptional quality components to do that, because I don't want to depend on some crappy Chinese relay that will fail on me and leave me in the dark. <rant> It's already bad enough depending on genuine Delco Remy CS-144 alternator that goes out and needs lifetime-warranty replacement once a year. I may not be done replacing the darned thing, or digging out my receipt over and over, but at least I'm done paying for it over and over. I'm glad I went that route with my Quadrajet, too.</rant> |

I agree those OEM setups must use high quality components, so I'll just have to be careful not to just blindly order stuff when I go to make my setup. I'll need to research and go to a salvage yard or order genuine OEM parts off of something modern, which will cost more. There is so much counterfeit stuff online to buy now, and so much cheap junk at O'Reilly, that it is pretty hard to buy new and know you're getting something good. |

Re: Buzzer alarm on light switch ??
It would be pretty easy to make your own headlight reminder with a typical “Bosch” cube type relay and some sort of 12V buzzer. Ground to terminal 86 and the ground side of the buzzer. Ignition power to terminal 85. The + side of the buzzer to 87a and marker light power to terminal 30.
If you turn the markers or headlights on without the relay energized, then power flows across the normally closed side to the buzzer. If the ignition is on, then the relay is in the open position and the buzzer will not sound regardless of if the lights are on or off. A relay and timer system could probably be made for automatically turning them on and off like modern cars, but you would need higher amp stuff. Might be easier if you already had a headlight relay kit, then you could do some trickier stuff with the relay trigger. You could use something like this in “delay off” mode https://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/adjus...f-12v-10a.html with ignition power to terminal 15 and battery power to 30, output to turn the relays on from terminal 87, and ground to terminal 31. So when you turned the ignition on the headlights would come on and stay on for 10 seconds or 60 seconds after the ignition was turned off. Littelfuse also has the KSDB series delay on break timers available in 12v which have several different delays or methods. It would wire similarly if you already had a headlight relay kit. All of these I would add fuses that are not mentioned in the wiring to protect the system.
