Should I be Concerned?
I found these pieces in my oil pump pick up screen. The engine is a 75? 454 and ran great when removed. My plan was to remove reseal and reinstall without a rebuild. I checked the timing gears and oil pump but did not see anything broken. What else should I be looking for or is this possibly from a past event?

Plastic (nylon) or metal?
Check with a magnet. Nylon could be from old timing chain. I had an oil pickup on a 396 that was half clogged with nylon once. Replaced it with no problems. |

Re: Should I be Concerned?
If it ran good just ignore that stuff.
Oil pumps won’t let anything big go thru without exploding! |

Re: Should I be Concerned?
My bet is they are pieces of a broken crank gear. I have done it myself and have watched others do it. Break the gear with a large chisel and hammer, Two good whacks and wha la.
The process is to remove the gear for a chain/gear replacement. Proper way is use a puller Problem is, how they break. I have never lost a piece but could be possible. Seems heavy to get in the screen but floating in oil, who knows. I could be very wrong
