52 Chevy 3100 It runs! Also a break question

I was recently asked by an elderly family friend if I would get this 52 Chevy into running condition. I'm new to working on something this old. Everything I've ever worked on has been 65 and later.

The truck ran when it was parked 10 years ago. Currently the things that need attention are the brakes, electrical, cooling and fuel system. My first order of business was getting the tank out and flushed along with the fuel lines and pump. I pulled the tank and it is in good shape. I'll pull the carb and pump tomorrow and take a look at them. I want the motor running before I start throwing money at other systems. I'm curious as to what the casting #s tell me and what the canister (Oil Filter?) attached to the intake manifold is. If I decoded the Vin correctly it's a Los Angeles 3100 1/2 ton built in Oct of 51.


I got it fired up today. Now onto the brakes, how do I determine what size wheel and master cylinders I need. Summit lists three different sizes of wheel cylinders and a bunch of different master cylinders.

Looks like a 235. It doesnt have the typical acorn nut hold down on top of the valve cover. Also the vents in the valve cover, just behind the oil cap, make it pre PCV system.

I have removed the fuel pump and have a question. On the bottom of the pump there are two flare fittings. One ran to a rubber hose that passed through the fire wall and the other terminated near the carb but wasn't connected to anything. Both had a little oil leak out when I removed them, what are they for?

Trying to picture what your describing...do you mean lines off fuel pump and they had oil in them?...got any pics?

From doing a bit of looking it appears they are some sort of vacuum multiplier. I assume one port was for the vacuum wipers but I don't know what the other is for. Is it worth it to try to rebuild this or easier to just buy a replacement? I haven't opened it yet but if it's like the carb varnish is going to be heavy.

Also on the Tube, Hagerty has just started a rebuild serious on a 1950. Just dragged it out of a field and are trying to get it running before the teardown. Its a little slow, hes not experienced on this engine and its a live feed not a scripted show, so its a little slow going.

Got the carb rebuilt today. Tomorrow I plan installing the fuel pump tomorrow, cleaning out the fuel lines and trying to fire her up.

Regarding the brake components, I see Classic Parts also has three different master cylinders: since yours is right on the cusp between 51 and 52 it could be part number 71-206 or 71-207. They're both 1-1/8" bore and look identical so maybe interchangeable. Your best bet is to call their tech line and get expert recommendation from someone knowledgeable about these trucks specifically. BTW, is that a broken stud on the front exhaust port?

It does look like a broken stud. I'll look a it tomorrow but it's probably been broke a long time and will be a pain to remove. After getting it fired up the owners have given me the green light to go forward with the brakes and cooling system. I think I will pull the MC and WCs and measure the pistons so I know what diameter I need and will an idea of what they should look like.

If I remember correctly that is just for alignment and something to hold the gasket in place when installing it.

Finally got all of the parts for the brakes and installed them. I bent up all new line also. We have a fully functional braking system. Next on the list is getting the cooling system repaired.
